Kanas is a Mongolian term meaning ‘beautiful and rich, mysterious and unpredictable’. It is located in the deep mountains of Burqin County, Altay Prefecture, Xinjiang, and is one of the most beautiful scenic spots in northern Xinjiang and one of China’s most beautiful places.
Kanas Lake captivates people with its mysterious lake monster, color-changing water, and dazzling natural scenery. The lake water often changes color with the seasons and weather, creating a fantastically picturesque landscape.
The surroundings of Kanas Lake are mixed forests of spruce, fir, and Siberian larch. The sunny slopes are covered with dense grass. Different plant communities are well-layered. Every autumn, various colorful forests compete in brilliance, presenting a dazzling display. The changing clouds above the forest and the winding Kanas River constitute a dreamlike autumn in Xinjiang.
Kanas Lake is an inland freshwater lake in the Kanas scenic area. The lake water comes from glacial meltwater from surrounding snow-capped mountains and local precipitation. The lake is at an altitude of 1,374 meters and covers an area of 45 square kilometers. It is a alpine lake formed by Quaternary glaciation and is one of China’s deep lakes. The shape of Kanas Lake resembles a crescent moon, surrounded by lush coniferous and broad-leaved mixed forests connected to the vast mountainous grassland. It was once voted as China’s most beautiful lake by Chinese National Geography magazine.
Shenxian Bay, Moon Bay, and Wolong Bay are collectively known as the ‘Three Bays’. They are landmark attractions of Kanas and must-visit places for visitors to Kanas. The first is Shenxian Bay, a shallow beach formed by Kanas Lake in a low and gentle mountain stream area. Under the sunshine, the lake surface shines with fine light, as if countless pearls are scattered freely. Therefore, it is also called ‘Pearl Beach’. Coupled with the frequent misty clouds, mountain scenery, lake water, and trees reflecting each other, it feels like being in a fairyland, hence the name Shenxian Bay.
II. The Gods’ Private Reserve – Hemu
Hemu Village in Xinjiang is located in an intermountain graben basin at the confluence of the Kanas River and Hemu River. It is a township in the northernmost part of western China. It is the concentrated residence of the Tuwa people and one of the only three Tuwa villages (Hemu Village, Kanas Village, and Baihaba Village).
Hemu Village is famous for its colorful and intoxicating autumn scenery. Cooking smoke rises slowly in the autumn scenery, forming a dreamlike belt of smoke, resembling a fairyland.
In the morning, on the observation deck of Hemu Village, you can enjoy a distant view of the sunrise, snow-capped peaks, and trickling streams, and a close view of the Tuwa people’s homes. The sunrise, morning fog, wooden houses, and Hemu River constitute a charming fairy tale world.
The most beautiful season in Hemu is from mid-September to early October each year. Due to latitude and altitude, autumn arrives here earlier than in the hinterland. In the golden autumn, the forests are dyed in various colors, creating a splendid view. No matter where you look, you will see a warm and bright golden yellow – rivers, wooden houses, cooking smoke, birch forests, and distant snow-capped mountains. It forms a photographer’s paradise in golden autumn.
