The Kanas scenic area includes three major scenic spots: Kanas, Hemu, and Baihaba, for which separate tickets, scenic area transportation, and ancient city maintenance fees need to be purchased. Jiadengyu is the ticket sales center for these three scenic areas. In Kanas, the main attractions are Kanas Lake, Hemu Village, and Baihaba Village. Kanas Lake is the core attraction, featuring the mysterious Kanas lake monster, and Shenxian Bay, Wolong Bay, and Moon Bay. Both Hemu and Baihaba are local villages, reminiscent of Swiss towns, and are fairylands on earth. Many people believe that these two villages are the essence of Kanas.

The Three Bays of Kanas: Shenxian Bay, Moon Bay, and Wolong Bay. The Three Bays are the cream of the scenic area, located successively on the road from Kanas to Jiadengyu. They are all well-developed attractions, with viewing platforms near the roadside and wooden boardwalks leading to the water’s edge. The Kanas River flows relatively quickly, but the water surface widens at the Three Bays, so the water is relatively calm.

The key to enjoying the Three Bays is the clouds and fog! The best time to take photos of the Three Bays is in the morning, when the sun’s rays push away the clouds and fog in the canyon, creating the most diverse cloud and fog formations. Therefore, if you want to truly capture the beauty of the Three Bays, a single sunny day is only enough to photograph one bay, because by the time you finish photographing one and move on to the next, the good weather will be gone. Since the Three Bays are viewed from a commanding height, telephoto lenses are used more often.

  1. The viewing route for the Three Bays can be to first head to Shenxian Bay in the morning to capture the morning mist, and then take a car to Moon Bay to take photos. At this time, the clouds and fog haven’t dispersed yet, and overlooking Moon Bay, with clouds and fog floating above the bay, you can capture the feeling of a fairyland.

Fish Viewing Pavilion: Located on the top of Luotuofeng on the west bank of Hanasi Lake, Fish Viewing Pavilion stands at an altitude of 2030m and has a height difference of 600m from the lake surface. The Fish Viewing Pavilion was built to observe the “lake monster” in the lake from a commanding height, commonly known as the big red fish. Although few people have seen the big red fish, this is the best angle to overlook the panoramic view of Kanas Lake. Firstly, you can have a bird’s-eye view of Kanas Lake, with three-quarters of the lake visible. Secondly, you can admire the beautiful mountain scenery around the lake, including layered peaks, inverted green peaks, and clouds billowing like waves. Thirdly, looking north, you can clearly see the highest peak of the Altay Mountains, Friendship Peak (4374m), as the Kanas River winds upwards from south to north and is blocked by mountains. The snowy mountains glittering with silver light, verdant forests, and emerald-green lakes are all within your sight. Therefore, visiting Fish Viewing Pavilion has become a must-do for tourists who come to Kanas.

September and October are the highlights of Kanas.

Winter in Kanas is equally fascinating with the lake frozen over. Kanas has launched a winter tourism program (from October 10th to May 10th of the next year), which not only waives some ticket fees but also allows visitors to experience riding in a “horse-drawn sleigh”. There is also a Winter Photography Tourism Festival every winter. Where to stay in Kanas: There are a limited number of accommodations within the scenic area, and reservations need to be made in advance; otherwise, you will have to take the shuttle bus back to Jiadengyu outside the scenic area for lodging. Jiadengyu is the accommodation hub of Kanas, offering a range of options from high-end to low-end, although don’t expect them to be cheap.
