The Beautiful Autumn of Kanas
China is vast and beautiful, but when it comes to the most beautiful place in autumn, Kanas certainly has its place.
Autumn in Kanas is a "paradise" and "God’s private reserve" for photographers, resembling a palette overturned by God, colorful and vibrant.
If you are tired of the monotonous cityscape and glaring neon lights, then come to Kanas, where the colors are intense yet comforting.
Know the Attractions in Advance
1. Jiadengyu: Jiadengyu is a tourism hub, accommodation, and rest area within the Kanas Scenic Area. Many people who plan to ride horses or hike to Hemu Village start from here.
2. Wolong Bay: Wolong Bay is a series of winding river bays formed by the long-term erosion of the Kanas River. The water here flows slowly, with a water area resembling a lake. Surrounded by dense forests, blooming flowers, and lush green grass, the small islands in the lake offer picturesque scenery.
3. Moon Bay: About 1 kilometer upstream from Wolong Bay is another breathtaking sight called "Moon Bay". The Kanas Riverbed forms several reverse "S"-shaped bends here, resembling a half-moon crescent, hence its name Moon Bay.
4. Fairy Bay: Continuing upstream along the river, endless scenic beauty always brings new surprises. At another bend in the road, Fairy Bay comes into view. The river here cuts through forests and meadows, forming islands that seem connected yet separate, earning it the name Fairy Bay.
5. Fish Viewing Terrace: The Fish Viewing Terrace was originally named Fish Viewing Pavilion, built in 1987 and renamed "Fish Viewing Terrace" after renovations in 2009. It is located on Camel Peak on the west bank of Kanas Lake, more than 660 meters above the lake surface. It got its name because it is the best spot to observe the mysterious lake monster of Kanas Lake.
6. Kanas Lake: Kanas Lake is the core attraction of the Kanas Scenic Area and is also the terminus of the scenic area’s shuttle buses. Kanas Lake is a quake lake formed by the blocking of a valley by ancient glacier movement. It is located in the northwest mountains of the Altay Mountains, with a lake area of 45.73 square kilometers, an average depth of 120 meters, and a maximum depth of 188.5 meters. Surrounded by dense primitive forests, it is a haven for wildlife and cold-water fish. It is the only distribution area of flora and fauna in the Southern Siberian region in China, where precious tree species such as Siberian larch, Korean pine, spruce, and fir, as well as numerous birch forests, grow. There are 83 families, 298 genera, and 798 species of plants known to exist here. There are 39 species of mammals, 117 species of birds, 4 species of amphibians and reptiles, and over 300 species of insects. The waters of Kanas Lake are home to rare fish species such as taimen, thinlip grayling, burbot, Altai sturgeon, and Siberian roach.
7. Baihaba Village: Baihaba Village is located on the east side of the Haba River, which marks the border between China and Kazakhstan, about 28 kilometers west of Kanas Lake. It is the westernmost village in China, known as the "First Village of the Northwest", and its residents are mainly Tuwa people and Kazakhs.
8. Hemu Village: Hemu Village is located southeast of Kanas Lake and is another ethnic township inhabited by the Tuwa people. Hemu Village also sits on an open basin surrounded by mountains, isolated from the outside world.
