You haven’t truly been to Xinjiang if you haven’t been to Kashgar. Kashgar Old Town is the heart of Kashgar, with a rich history spanning over two thousand years, exquisite handicrafts, and a strong ethnic flavor, making those who wander through it forget the passage of time.
The essence of the Pamir Plateau can be summarized by three mountains, two lakes, one city, and one ethnic group: The three mountains refer to the Three Heroes of Kunlun: Mount Muztagh Ata, Kongur Tagh, and Kongur Tobe; the two lakes are Karakul Lake and Baisha Lake; the one city is Stone City, inhabited by the ancient Pu Li kingdom of the Thirty-Six Western Regions and an important hub on the ancient Silk Road; the one ethnic group refers to the kind and honest Tajik people.
Baisha Lake – Winding through the Pamir Plateau, traveling along the Karakoram Highway, known as the ‘Eighth Wonder of the World’, one passes布伦口, Baisha Lake, Karakul Lake, Mount Muztagh Ata… The gorges, snow-capped peaks, lakes, grasslands, and glaciers along the way are breathtakingly beautiful!
The oasis of Golden Grass Marsh and the ancient Silk Road site of Stone City on the ‘Roof of the World’
Zepu (Golden Populus Euphratesiana National Forest Park) – In the distance lies the majestic Kunlun Mountains, while at your feet, the tributaries of the Yarkant River rush tirelessly, passing through the park. The snowy Kunlun Mountains and the Yarkant River together nurtured this magical land. The golden Populus Euphratesiana forest here is surrounded by water on three sides, possessing both the grace of regions south of the Yangtze River and the ruggedness of northern China.
Luntai Tarim Populus Euphratesiana Forest Park – Every mid-to-late October, it is the annual carnival of the Populus Euphratesiana forest. There are far fewer tourists here than in Ejina Banner, Inner Mongolia, but the radiant scenery is by no means inferior!
