Route Highlight 1: Jiaohe Ancient City, Kumtag Desert
Jiaohe Ancient City – It is the world’s oldest and best-preserved city made of sun-dried earth and also China’s most complete urban ruin with a history of over two thousand years. "No birds fly by Jiaohe City, and horseshoes slide on the Luntai Road." Standing on the streets of Jiaohe Ancient City, one sees ruins and the setting sun. Below the city cliff, the river has been flowing for thousands of years, with tall poplar trees in the riverbed. Across the river, it is grape-harvest season, and the descendants of Jiaohe are busy harvesting. In a trance, life and death, today and yesterday, are separated by just a river. The ruins everywhere are still magnificent, evoking deep thoughts and countless associations…
Kumtag means "sand mountain" in Uyghur. Locals call it Sand Mountain Park instead of Desert Park due to its undulating terrain, steep sand dunes, extreme aridity, extremely deep dry sand layers, almost no vegetation distribution within the desert, and highly mobile dunes. It is a desert with harsh natural conditions in the arid northwest of China. Since it is separated from Shanshan County by only a river, it is also
It is the only desert in the world connected to a city and is known as the ‘Desert in the City’. Because the wind direction has always blown towards the southern end of Shanshan for thousands of years and has never moved north, it has not buried Shanshan City. It is a miniature of the miracle of ‘green not retreating, sand not advancing’ in the history of desert control worldwide. The diverse dunes inside are also unique in the world, making it a museum that浓缩了the dunes of major deserts around the world. It has been rated as China’s most beautiful desert by National Geographic.
Route Highlight 2: Urho Devil’s City
The Devil’s City, also known as the Urho Wind City, features a magnificent and spectacular landscape of wind erosion formed over a long period of time, earning it the name Devil’s City. Formed by the incredible power of nature over a long period, the dense and well-organized sandstone formations stand like a castle amidst the vast Gobi desert. The various scenes are truly diverse and colorful, creating a dreamlike labyrinth world.
Route Highlight 3: Wolong Bay, Moon Bay, Shenxian Bay
Wolong Bay is locally known as Kazan Lake, meaning ‘pot-bottom lake’, named after its shape resembling a pot bottom. The Kanas River flows through here, forming a series of winding river bends through long-term erosion. It is also named ‘Wolong Bay’ because it resembles a dragon coiled and playing in the water. Looking down at the panoramic view of Wolong Bay, it resembles a dragon coiled and playing in the water. Legend has it that a long time ago, a giant dragon was playing in the water here while riding the clouds and winds. Suddenly, the weather changed drastically. Too engrossed in the beautiful scenery of Kanas, the dragon was frozen solid in an instant when snow covered Kanas Lake. Unable to fly away due to being frozen, its body turned into a dragon-shaped shallow beach. Later, people called it ‘Wolong Bay’.
Route Highlight 4: Fish Viewing Pavilion, Baihaba
The Fish Viewing Pavilion is located within the Kanas Scenic Area in Burqin, Xinjiang. Built on the top of the Haralat Mountain (meaning ‘camel’s neck’ in Mongolian) at an altitude of 2030 meters, it has a vertical drop of over 600 meters from the lake surface. It is named the Fish Viewing Pavilion because it is an excellent spot for observing ‘lake monsters’. The Fish Viewing Pavilion is the cream of Kanas attractions and the only platform where one can pause to take in the breathtaking beauty of Kanas. Climbing to the Fish Viewing Pavilion is the exclamation mark at the end of a Kanas tour. One cannot fully appreciate the ultimate beauty of Kanas without visiting the Fish Viewing Pavilion.
Route Highlight 5: Hemu, Colorful Beach
Hemu is a Tuva word meaning ‘fat oil’. Legend has it that a long time ago, an old hunter came here from elsewhere to hunt. He killed a large brown bear and found that the fat on the bear’s back was four to five fingers thick when skinning it. The onlookers exclaimed in surprise, ‘Hemu! Hemu!’ Thus, the place name Hemu was born. Hemu Township is the high administrative agency of the grassland and is the northernmost township in western China. It is inhabited by the Tuvas, who preserve their complete ethnic traditions—Hemu Village.
