Travel time
Due to climatic differences, all four seasons in Xinjiang are worth visiting, each with its own unique characteristics. Generally speaking, July to September is the best travel time for northern Xinjiang; August to October is the best travel time for southern Xinjiang.
January – February: Hemu Snow Village, Kanas Snow Village, Kashgar in southern Xinjiang, and the Muztagh Ata Glacier. At this time, Xinjiang has fewer people and beautiful scenery.
March – April: Be aware that spring is coming soon in Xinjiang. This is a good time to see apricot blossoms. The apricot blossoms in Tashkurgan County (Datong Township, Bandir Township), the Nalati Apricot Blossom Valley… The timing of the apricot blossoms varies each year, so please refer to specific notices.
May: Southern Xinjiang gradually enters summer, while northern Xinjiang enters spring. Kanas has not yet entered spring and needs to wait for the grass to turn green. At this time, you can see the blooming flowers in Yili, and the scenery varies depending on the flowering season.
June – August: Xinjiang is in full bloom, and it is the best time to appreciate lavender fields and rapeseed flower seas; the scenery of the Eastern Swiss-like landscapes composed of grasslands, lakes, and snow-capped mountains will also reach its best during this period.
September: Don’t go to Yili at this time. Once the grasslands in Yili turn yellow, they are not as beautiful. The main attractions are in Kanas and southern Xinjiang. The popular autumn scenery in Kanas begins to take shape, with the golden birch forest and the smoke from the homes of the Tuva people forming a fairyland on earth, which is a paradise favored by photographers.
October: The birch forest in Kanas and the poplar trees in southern Xinjiang.
November – December: Same as January – February.
Which is more fun, southern Xinjiang or northern Xinjiang?
The Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, referred to as Xinjiang, is located in the northwest of China, with an area of 1.66 million square kilometers, accounting for one-sixth of China’s total land area. For people with limited time, it is indeed very difficult to decide how to explore the entire Xinjiang. Therefore, we need to understand clearly in advance the scenery we want to see.
To put it this way, northern Xinjiang has more beautiful scenery, while southern Xinjiang has more fascinating culture. Xinjiang is divided into northern and southern Xinjiang by the Tianshan Mountains.
Compared to southern Xinjiang, northern Xinjiang has slightly more rainfall and less severe desertification. The main travel destinations in northern Xinjiang generally refer to Tianshan Tianchi, Turpan, and the Kumtag Desert in Shanshan, Yili, Sayram Lake, Kanas, and Koktokay.
