What attractions are there in Northern Xinjiang?
Northern Xinjiang refers to the northern part of Xinjiang. The Tianshan Mountains divide Xinjiang into two major parts, with the area north of the mountains being called Northern Xinjiang. It includes regions such as Urumqi, Karamay, Altay, Tacheng, Changji, Shihezi, Beitun, Kekedala, Yili, Bortala, etc.
Northern Xinjiang is relatively more developed in terms of economy and tourism compared to Southern Xinjiang. The main attractions are as follows:
1. Grape Valley: Named after its abundant grape production, it is a tourist attraction in Turpan City, Xinjiang. On May 8, 2007, Turpan Grape Valley Scenic Area was officially approved by the China National Tourism Administration as a National AAAAA-level tourist attraction.
2. Tianshan Tianchi: Anciently known as ‘Yaochi’, it is located in the territory of Fukang City, Changji Hui Autonomous Prefecture, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, on the northern slope of Mount Bogda. It is a natural scenic area centered around a high-altitude lake, 97 kilometers away from Urumqi City.
3. Kanas Lake: National AAAAA-level tourist attraction, National Geological Park, National Forest Park, Chinese Nature Reserve, National Natural Heritage, National Low-carbon Tourism Experimental Zone
4. Flaming Mountain: A famous attraction in Turpan. It is located at the northern edge of the Turpan Basin, on the northern route of the ancient Silk Road, and is mainly composed of Mesozoic Jurassic, Cretaceous, and Tertiary red sand, conglomerate, and mudstone. Locals call it ‘Keziletag’, meaning ‘Red Mountain’.
