Tourist Attractions in Southern Xinjiang
The southern Xinjiang, as the name implies, is the southern region of Xinjiang. The beautiful natural scenery in southern Xinjiang, such as the majestic Tomur Peak Glacier, is breathtaking. In general, southern Xinjiang has many unique tourist attractions. The main attractions include Thousand Buddha Grottoes, Tomur Peak Glacier, Kashi Stone City, Xiangfei Tomb, Jinhuyang National Forest Park, Mushtagh Peak, Pamir Plateau, Kashi Grand Bazaar, Qizi Ecological Park, Korla Lotus Lake, and so on. Here are introductions to a few famous attractions.
1. Thousand Buddha Grottoes. Located in a quiet valley at the foot of Quetage Mountain in the town of Kezir between Kuqa and Baicheng, the Thousand Buddha Grottoes are on the red-brown cliff wall of Mingwudage Mountain on the north bank of the Muzhati River, about 7 kilometers south of the town of Kezir. It has extremely high artistic value and can be called the ‘Second Dunhuang Mogao Caves’.
2. Tomur Peak Glacier. The Tomur Peak Glacier is located in Wensu County, Aksu Prefecture, and belongs to a forest ecosystem type nature reserve. The reserve is 105 kilometers long from east to west and 28 kilometers wide from north to south. The Tomur Peak Nature Reserve was established in June 1980 and was upgraded to a national nature reserve in 2003.
3. Kashi Stone City. Located on the north side of Taxkorgan Tajik Autonomous County in Xinjiang, at an altitude of 3,100 meters, it is a famous ancient city site on the ancient Silk Road in Xinjiang. It is the intersection of the middle and southern routes of the ancient Silk Road, where several roads from Kashi, Yecheng, and Yingjisha to the Pamir Plateau converge.
