Duku Highway, the highway from Dushanzi to Kuqa. It is a 561-kilometer-long highway connecting northern and southern Xinjiang. It spans towering mountains and traverses deep valleys. Its completion has shortened the distance between northern and southern Xinjiang by nearly half from the original 1,000 kilometers, making it a monument in the history of highway construction in China.
To build this highway, tens of thousands of soldiers struggled for 10 years, among which 168 road-building soldiers sacrificed their precious lives.
Scenic spots:
At the southern end of the Duku Highway, people will also admire the magnificent Kizilia Mountain Landscape Area, where the red rock forest is magnificent. Not only that, the mysterious Grand Canyon Scenic Area of Mount Tianshan nearby also amazes visitors with its deep and perilous winding paths.
Moreover, the Buddhist grotto "Ai Ai Grotto", carved in the Tang Dynasty, was discovered in the valley, with exquisite murals inside. This area has become an authoritative location for location shooting.
The Kuqa River has been accompanying one side of the highway. When the highway passes through the "Flame Zone" at the southern foot of Mount Tianshan, it is replaced by steep cliffs, green grass, thorny bushes with yellow flowers passionately blooming all over the trees, and scattered pine trees. The valley is filled with the fragrance of wildflowers, and towering peaks piercing the clouds are adorned with chilling white snow.
The river flows swiftly between the mountains, and gentle meadows lie on the hillsides. The evening glow settles on the grass, covering the meadows with a layer of gold. The shepherd encloses the sheep with stones and wooden fences, lights a fire in the yurt, and the curling smoke rises slowly… This pastoral song of the plateau always unintentionally catches the eye along the way, filling thoughts with poetry.
At the same time, you cannot help but hold your breath repeatedly due to the dangerousness of the road. A large part of the cliffs along the road form an inverse slope of no less than 90 degrees with the ground, like being chopped by a knife, with a relative height difference of more than 100 meters. The Longchi Waterfall suspended in three sections on the mountainside, the emerald-green Big and Small Dragon Lakes with flocks of waterbirds, are all hidden in the hinterland of the Tianshan Mountains at an altitude of more than 2000 meters in the middle of the Duku Highway.
Continuing on, with pine forests stretching along the way, people will also see China’s second-largest grassland – Bayanbulak Grassland. There, the grass is green, wildflowers are like a brocade, Mongolian yurts have curling smoke, and swans inhabit the lakes every year.
In addition, the Nalati Grassland, Qiaoerma Scenic Area, one pass after another, snowy peaks, clouds flowing in the mountains, and the highest altitude tunnel in China will make this journey extraordinary.
One-third of the Duku Highway is悬崖绝壁 (cliff), one-fifth is in the perpetual frost zone of high mountains, it crosses nearly ten major rivers of the Tianshan Mountains, and climbs over four ice-covered passes with snow all year round. Its driving difficulty is imaginable. However, the scenery along the way can only be described as magical. Heading northeast from Kuqa, where the ancient Kingdom of Kucha was located, along National Highway 217, the mystery of the Duku Highway begins to unfold layer by layer. Along the way, you can enjoy the fiery and dry scenery of the Keziliya Mountains, the mysterious and steep canyon scenery, the dense vegetation and nomadic customs in the hinterland of the Tianshan Mountains, the vast grassland scenery, and more.
Scenic areas along the Duku Highway (south to north): Keziliya Mountain Landscape, Mysterious Tianshan Grand Canyon, Big and Small Dragon Lakes, Tielimaiti Pass, Bayanbulak Grassland, Nalati

Many people may ask: Why does a highway become a candidate for a ‘very beautiful place’? Only those who have traveled this road will truly understand the answer. This is not an ordinary road.
