Essential travel guide and precautions for traveling in Xinjiang
Regarding whether southern Xinjiang or northern Xinjiang is more fun, it is said that southern Xinjiang is known for its humanities, while northern Xinjiang is known for its nature. Xinjiang is divided by the Tianshan Mountains, with the north being northern Xinjiang and the south being southern Xinjiang.
Relatively speaking, northern Xinjiang has slightly more abundant rainfall and less desertification than southern Xinjiang. The main attractions in northern Xinjiang include Tianshan Tianchi Lake, Turpan, and the Kumtagh Desert in Shanshan, Ili, Sayram Lake, Kanas, Koktokay, etc.
It is often said that the peak season in Xinjiang is from May to October, but actually Xinjiang is really vast, and there are beautiful landscapes throughout the year, all natural and unadorned beauty.
Before departing for Xinjiang, let me first tell you when Xinjiang is beautiful. Choose a suitable time to travel to Xinjiang this year.
January – February: Hemu Snow Village, Kanas Snow Village, Kashgar in southern Xinjiang, and Muztagh Glacier. During the winter at this time, there are fewer people in Xinjiang, but the snowy scenery is also very beautiful.
March – April: Be aware that spring is coming to Xinjiang soon. This is a good time to see apricot blossoms. Apricot Blossom Valley, apricot blossoms in Tashkurgan County (Datong Township, Bandier Township), Nalati Apricot Blossom Valley… The apricot blossom time varies slightly each year, so please refer to specific notifications. It’s around April like this. When we went last time, the leaves had already sprouted.
May: Southern Xinjiang gradually enters summer, while northern Xinjiang enters spring. Kanas has not yet entered spring and needs to wait for the grass to turn green. At this time, you can see the flowers blooming in Ili, and the scenery varies depending on the flowering season. Therefore, May is recommended for visiting southern Xinjiang or Ili.
June – August: Xinjiang is amazing all around. The whole region is a great place to visit. The scenery is fantastic!!! It is recommended to visit the Duku Highway, where the scenery is superb!
September: Don’t go to Ili at this time, because once the grasslands in Ili turn yellow, they are not as beautiful. The main attractions are in Kanas and southern Xinjiang.
October: The birch forest in Kanas and the diversifolious poplar trees in southern Xinjiang. Don’t go to Kanas after mid-October, because winter is coming there soon.
November – December: Same as January – February
