Beautiful Autumn in Kanas
China is vast and beautiful, but when it comes to the most beautiful place in autumn, Kanas certainly deserves a place.
Autumn in Kanas is a ‘paradise’ and ‘God’s private reserve’ for photographers, resembling a God-overturned palette with a riot of colors.
If you are tired of the monotonous city and blinding neon lights, then come to Kanas, where the colors are vibrant and comforting.
Attractions in Advance
1. Jiadengyu: Jiadengyu is a tourist hub, accommodation, and rest area within the Kanas Scenic Area. Many people who plan to ride horses or hike to Hemu Township start from here.
2. Wolong Bay: Wolong Bay is a series of winding river bays formed by the long-term erosion and scouring of the Kanas River here. The water flow is slow, and the water area resembles a lake. Surrounded by dense forests, colorful flowers, and lush green grass, the small islands in the lake offer scenic views.
3. Moon Bay: About 1 kilometer upstream from Wolong Bay is another breathtaking ‘Moon Bay’. The Kanas Riverbed forms several reverse ‘S’-shaped bends here, with the river curves resembling half-moon crescents, hence its name Moon Bay.
4. Fairy Bay: Continuing upstream along the river, endless beautiful scenery always brings new surprises. At another bend in the road, Fairy Bay comes into view. The river here divides the forest and grassland into islands that seem connected yet separate, earning it the name Fairy Bay.
5. Fish Viewing Terrace: The Fish Viewing Terrace, originally named Fish Viewing Pavilion, was built in 1987 and renamed the ‘Fish Viewing Terrace’ after renovations in 2009. It is located on Camel Peak on the west bank of Kanas Lake, more than 660 meters above the lake surface. It is named ‘Fish Viewing Pavilion’ because it is the best spot to observe the Kanas Lake monster.
6. Kanas Lake: Kanas Lake is the core attraction of the Kanas Scenic Area and is also the terminal stop for scenic area shuttle buses. Kanas Lake is a natural dammed lake formed by ancient glaciers blocking a valley and accumulating water. It is located in the northwest mountains of the Altay Mountains, with a lake area of 45.73 square kilometers, an average depth of 120 meters, and a maximum depth of 188.5 meters. Surrounded by dense primitive forests, it is a heaven for wildlife and cold-water fish. It is the only distribution area of South Siberian flora and fauna in China, with precious tree species such as Siberian larch, Korean pine, spruce, and fir, as well as numerous birch forests. There are 83 families, 298 genera, and 798 species of plants known to exist here. There are 39 species of mammals, 117 species of birds, 4 species of amphibians and reptiles, and over 300 species of insects. The lake is home to rare fish species such as taimen, lenok, burbot, Altai sturgeon, and Siberian roach.
7. Baihaba Village: Baihaba Village is located on the east side of the Khabar River, which serves as the border between China and Kazakhstan, about 28 kilometers west of Kanas Lake. It is the westernmost village in China, mainly inhabited by the Tuva people and Kazakhs.
8. Hemu Township: Hemu Township is located southeast of Kanas Lake and is another township inhabited by the Tuva people.
