The Beautiful Autumn of Kanas
China is vast and beautiful, but when it comes to the most beautiful place in autumn, Kanas definitely holds a place.
Kanas in autumn is a ‘paradise’ and ‘God’s private reserve’ for photographers, resembling a painter’s palette overturned by God, colorful and vibrant.
If you are tired of the monotonous cityscape and glaring neon lights, then come to Kanas, where the colors are intense and comforting.
Know the Attractions Beforehand
1. Jiadengyu: Jiadengyu is a tourism hub and accommodation area in the Kanas scenic area. Many people who plan to ride horses or hike to Hemu Town start from here.
2. Wolong Bay: Wolong Bay is a series of river bends with zigzagging shorelines formed by the long-term erosion and scouring of the Kanas River here. The water flow is slow, and the water area resembles a lake. The surrounding area is dense with lush forests, colorful flowers, and green grass. The small islands in the lake offer scenic views.
3. Moon Bay: About 1 kilometer upstream from Wolong Bay is another breathtaking ‘Moon Bay’. The Kanas riverbed forms several reverse ‘S’-shaped bends here, resembling a crescent moon, hence its name Moon Bay.
4. Fairy Glen: Continue upstream along the river, and endless beautiful scenery will always bring new surprises. At another bend in the road, Fairy Glen comes into view. The river here cuts the forest and grassland into small islands that seem connected but also disconnected, earning it the name Fairy Glen.
5. Fish Viewing Platform: The Fish Viewing Platform was originally named Fish Viewing Pavilion and was built in 1987. It was renamed ‘Fish Viewing Platform’ after being rebuilt in 2009. It is located on Camel Peak on the west bank of Kanas Lake, with a height difference of over 660 meters from the lake surface. It is named ‘Fish Viewing Pavilion’ because it is the best location to observe the Kanas Lake monster.
6. Kanas Lake: Kanas Lake is the core attraction of the Kanas scenic area and is also the terminal stop for scenic area shuttle buses. Kanas Lake is a landslide-dammed lake formed by the strong movement of ancient glaciers blocking the valley. It is located in the northwest mountains of the Altai Mountains, with a lake area of 45.73 square kilometers, an average depth of 120 meters, and a maximum depth of 188.5 meters. The surrounding area is densely covered with primitive forests and is a paradise for wildlife and cold-water fish. It is the only distribution area of Siberian flora and fauna in China, where precious tree species such as Siberian larch, Korean pine, spruce, and fir, as well as numerous birch forests, grow. There are 83 families, 298 genera, and 798 species of plants known. There are 39 species of mammals, 117 species of birds, 4 species of amphibians and reptiles, and over 300 species of insects. The lake waters are home to rare fish species such as the taimen, fine-scaled salmon, burbot, Altai sturgeon, and Siberian roach.
7. Baihaba Village: Baihaba Village is on the east side of the Khabar River, which marks the border between China and Kazakhstan. It is approximately 28 kilometers west of Kanas Lake and is the westernmost village in China. The residents are mainly Tuvas and Kazakhs.
8. Hemu Town: Hemu Town is located on the southeast side of Kanas Lake and is another ethnic township inhabited by the Tuvas.
