Day 1: Urumqi – Devil City – Burqin (about 620KM, driving time about 8 hours)

The driver will pick you up at the hotel according to the agreed time. After everyone is present, leave Urumqi and drive along the Hukegong Road. The flat highway is sometimes bordered by fertile farmland and sometimes by barren sandy land. After passing through the oil city of Karamay, follow National Highway 217 all the way north…
At noon, when the horizon appears with uneven mesas, like castles, you will soon arrive at the乌尔禾World Devil City. The towering "Eye of the Devil" at the entrance of the scenic area watches every tourist who comes here. Take the special small train shuttle bus to enter the tour. The carriages are open, making it convenient for taking photos. Traveling along the curved roads and following the guidance of the audio guide, look out at those mesas, some high and some low. Some resemble an eagle spreading its wings, rushing towards you; some resemble a dog looking at the moon, vivid and lifelike; and some resemble the Titanic, spectacular. It feels very magical.
After the tour, continue to advance into the vast desert grassland of Hefeng County. Unlike the green carpet-like wetland grassland, the desert grassland scenery is slightly desolate, but it can still nourish fat cattle and sheep. When you see a large number of red roofs in the distance ahead, that is the fairy tale border town of Burqin County. The Irtysh River, which flows into the Arctic Ocean, flows slowly past the county town. The county town is clean and tidy, and the hotels and inns lining the streets also indicate that this is a veritable tourist city.
At sunset, head to the Colorful Beach for a visit. This is a special stretch of the Irtysh River. The south bank is lush with trees and grass, while the north bank is barren land. The two banks of the river each have their own unique scenery. The hills here are rich in geomorphic colors and are known as the palette overturned by God. Especially when the weather is sunny and the sunset is approaching, after entering the scenic area, you will see the afterglow shining on the hills along the riverbank, with dazzlingly beautiful colors. Walking through the gullies of the land, the soil on both sides is either taupe or golden yellow. You can also climb up to the observation deck to overlook the colorful impact of the entire scenic area on your eyes and take the pictures you want with your camera.
When you come to Burqin, you must visit the bustling Hedi Night Market, taste the grilled fish specialty here, and enjoy a cup of sweet kvass to wash away the fatigue of today’s journey.

Tips
1. Morning rush hour traffic in Urumqi is severe. The driver will pick up passengers from the hotel, and the departure time will be based on the driver’s notification.
2. When visiting the Ghost City at noon, pay attention to sunscreen and hydration. Be sure to bring items like an umbrella, sunhat, and sunglasses.
3. There are many mosquitoes at Colorful Beach Scenic Area. Prepare for mosquito prevention before visiting, such as wrapping a scarf, bringing floral water, and mentholated balm.
4. Prices at Burqin Night Market vary. Be sure to ask clearly about the pricing unit and price before ordering to avoid an unpleasant experience.
Lunch is on your own. Recommendation: Eat in Wuerhe Town, with dishes like noodles with sauce or pilaf and other Xinjiang-style cuisine. Average cost per person is around 30 yuan.

Day 2: Burqin – Kanas (about 140KM, about 4 hours of driving)
Accommodation: Inside Kanas Scenic Area (wooden cabin)
Leave for Kanas early in the morning. The road winds across the grassland, with occasionally exposed granite boulders serving as landmarks. To better enjoy the scenery outside the window along the way, there is a speed limit throughout this stretch of road. Continue driving as the vehicle enters the mountain road and the hinterland of the Altai Mountains. Altai means “golden mountain” in Turkic, and this mountain range is rich in gold mines. Although the buried treasures underground may not be visible, the scenery on the surface is everywhere. Head to the Jiadenyu Ticket Center to purchase tickets and transfer to a shuttle bus to enter Kanas. The beautiful scenery is endless along the way. A little secret for you: sitting on the left side of the shuttle bus will offer a more beautiful view. As the vehicle travels, it passes through deep canyons, dense forests, and crosses the Kanas River at times. Along the way, pass by the scenic viewpoints of the Three Bays, including Wolong Bay, where the outline of the small island in the river resembles a stegosaurus from Jurassic Park lying across the river. Next, arrive at Moon Bay, overlooking a giant footprint-like impression left in the crescent-shaped river bend, lifelike and vivid. When you reach Shenxian Bay, the water surface becomes shimmering like the glow of a pearl necklace. Yaze Lake has a calm water surface like a mirror, where wild ducks, swans, and other wild waterbirds can often be seen. An hour later, arrive at the Kanas Transfer Center, where you can choose to visit in three directions:
The first route leads to the Kanas Lake pier (no additional charge, one-way about 10 minutes by car). Here you can get close to Kanas Lake, stand by the lake to watch the waves and enjoy the beautiful scenery of the lake surrounded by mountains.
The second route leads to the Fish Viewing Terrace (requires separate ticket purchase, 20 yuan/person, one-way about 30 minutes). The shuttle bus travels to the midslope, and you need to climb 1,068 steps to reach the top. This is the highest point in Kanas. Standing here, you can overlook the entire lake and take in the distant peaks.
The third route leads to Baihaba Village (requires separate ticket purchase and border pass, 75 yuan/person, one-way about 1 hour). After about 1 hour by car, you will arrive at Baihaba Village, the northwestern corner of China.
It is recommended to choose the lakeside or Fish Viewing Terrace. Baihaba takes more time, so consider it as appropriate.
After sightseeing, return to the Kanas transfer center in the afternoon and head to the wooden cabin where you will stay tonight. In the evening when the crowds have retreated, take a stroll by Kanas Lake, listening to the rustling of pine trees and watching tired birds return to their nests.

Tips

2. To enter the Kanas scenic area, you must transfer to a scenic area shuttle bus. Since the shuttle bus operates on a rolling schedule with many stops along the way, for your convenience, it is strongly recommended to bring items needed for the night into the scenic area and temporarily store other large luggage in the driver’s vehicle.
3. To provide more time for sightseeing, we have specially arranged accommodation within the scenic area regardless of cost. However, due to poor local infrastructure and environmental protection requirements, accommodation conditions within the scenic area are poor. Please be mentally prepared.
4. Due to its remote mountainous location and backward conditions, Kanas scenic area lacks supplies, resulting in higher prices for some goods.
5. There are local residents living within the scenic area. For your own safety, please do not tease cats and dogs, and stay away from animals.
6. During free time, please be sure to pay attention to personal and financial security. Medical conditions within the scenic area are backward, so avoid getting injured.
7. Kanas is located at a higher latitude, and the snow season begins in mid-to-late September. In case of force majeure factors such as severe weather, the traffic police department may take temporary road closure measures, which may affect your itinerary.

Day 3: Kanas – Hemu (about 95 km, about 3.5 hours by car)
Accommodation: Inside Hemu Scenic Area (wooden cabin)
On a calm morning after rain, you have the chance to admire the Kanas morning mist drifting like white veils among the mountains. You can hike to Shenxian Bay (about 5 km one-way) or the lakeside to witness the fairyland-like mountain mist in the morning. You can choose to sleep in and regain your energy. If you didn’t climb the Guanyu Platform yesterday, you can arrange it for today. In short, this morning is entirely your free time. You can enjoy your undisturbed tour as much as you like. Return to the transfer center at noon.
Transfer to a shuttle bus to leave Kanas and meet your driver at the gate of the Jiadenyu Scenic Area, then take your own car to Hemu Village.
The road to Hemu features dense primitive forests, flat grasslands, and deep canyons. The scenery along the way is so beautiful that it is hard to take it all in. It can be called a scenic highway. After arriving at the Hemu Ticket Station, transfer to a scenic area shuttle bus for a tour. When you see a cluster of pointed-roof wooden cabins in the distance, that’s Hemu Village. The beauty of Hemu lies in its primitiveness. It is the settlement of the Kanas Tuwa people. The pointed-roof wooden cabins are unique. Cows and sheep leisurely stroll in the village, cats and dogs lazily bask in the sun in the yard, and the Hemu River flows happily beside the village. Everything seems quiet and peaceful. The village is not big, so you can wander around freely. Stay in a wooden cabin at night to experience the primitive life of the locals.

Day 4: Hemu – Beitun (about 260 km, 6 hours by car)
Accommodation: Beitun City (Beitun Taijin Hotel, Xiangyi Haichuan, or equivalent)
The scenery will not disappoint early risers. Photography enthusiasts can get up early and head to the viewing platform. The primitive village seems like a person who has had enough sleep, stretching its muscles and bones. Watch the curling smoke rise, with the light blue smoke blending with the morning mist, like a thin veil covering the top of Hemu Village. Cute cows and sheep greet the morning sun and leisurely graze. The Hemu River flows beside the village, with a wooden bridge spanning the two banks. The riverside is adorned with graceful birch forests. Empty your mind, listen to the singing of the Hemu River, and watch a flower bloom. Spend the morning relaxing in Hemu Village.
After lunch, leave Hemu and return to Beitun City by car to check into the hotel, or you can book a train ticket by yourself to return to Urumqi on the overnight train. (Only trains departing after 23:00 can be selected)

After breakfast, bid farewell to Beitun and head into the desert, crossing the Junggar Basin along National Highway 216 and traversing the Gurbantünggüt Desert. Along the way, pass through the Karamay Hooved Animal Nature Reserve, where Przewalski’s horse, which is rarer than the panda, can be seen in the distance if you’re lucky. You may also catch a glimpse of wild horses and Mongolian gazelles. When the desert on both sides of the road takes on a reddish-brown hue, we will enter the Colorful Bay area. This hilly landscape was uplifted due to tectonic movement, and over millions of years, various minerals in the soil have formed colorful landforms of yellow and red hues after exposure to wind and sun.
