I had heard of Karez before, but this was my first time seeing it. Karez is actually a Uyghur word meaning underground water canal. Karez is also known as ‘well canal’, with its water source coming from melted snow water. Several water wells are dug from the ground, and the groundwater from these wells is connected into water canals for daily drinking and crop irrigation, with the end of the canal becoming a desert oasis.
Flaming Mountain — In order to experience the heat of the Flaming Mountain, in the afternoon, during the hottest time of the day, we arrived at the Flaming Mountain where Tang Monk passed through on his journey to the West. The temperature here is indeed very high, with a giant thermometer in the shape of a Monkey King’s Golden-hooped Staff pointing to 51 degrees (surface temperature). Sculptures of Niu Maowang, Iron Fan Princess, and Plantain Fan from the Journey to the West TV series are located in the scenic area, leaning against the bald Flaming Mountain, making one feel immersed in the scene and recall the unforgettable story of borrowing the Plantain Fan three times from the Journey to the West.
