Travel Time
Due to climatic differences, all four seasons in Xinjiang are worth visiting, each with its unique charm. Generally speaking: July to September is the best time to travel to Northern Xinjiang; August to October is the best time to travel to Southern Xinjiang.
January – February: Hemu Snow Village, Kanas Snow Village, Kashgar in Southern Xinjiang, and the Muztagh Ata Glacier. At this time, Xinjiang has fewer people and beautiful scenery.
March – April: Be aware that spring is coming to Xinjiang soon. This is a good time to see apricot blossoms. The apricot blossoms in Tashkurgan County (Datong Township, Bandier Township), Nalati Apricot Blossom Valley… The time for apricot blossoms varies each year, so please refer to specific notifications.
May: Southern Xinjiang gradually enters summer, while Northern Xinjiang enters spring. Kanas has not yet entered spring and needs to wait for the grass to turn green. At this time, you can see the flowers blooming in Ili, and the scenery varies depending on the flowering season.
June – August: Xinjiang is fully blooming, and it is an excellent time to appreciate lavender fields and rapeseed flower seas; while the scenery of grasslands, lakes, and snow-capped mountains forms an Eastern Swiss-like landscape.
September: Don’t go to Ili at this time. Once the grasslands in Ili turn yellow, they are not as beautiful. The main attractions are in Kanas and Southern Xinjiang. The popular autumn scenery in Kanas begins to take shape, with a fairyland composed of golden birch forests and the smoke from Tuwa people’s houses, which is a paradise favored by photographers.
October: The birch forest in Kanas and the poplar forest in Southern Xinjiang.
November – December: Same as January – February.
Which part of Southern Xinjiang and Northern Xinjiang is more fun?
The Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, referred to as Xinjiang, is located in the northwest border of China, covering an area of 1.66 million square kilometers, accounting for one-sixth of China’s total land area. For those with limited time, it is indeed a very difficult decision to explore the entire Xinjiang. Therefore, we need to understand in advance what scenery we want to see.
To put it this way, Northern Xinjiang boasts more beautiful scenery, while Southern Xinjiang has a more interesting culture. Xinjiang is divided into northern and southern parts by the Tianshan Mountains. The north of the Tianshan Mountains is Northern Xinjiang, and the south is Southern Xinjiang.
Northern Xinjiang, in comparison, has slightly more rainfall and less desertification than Southern Xinjiang. The main travel destinations in Northern Xinjiang generally refer to Tianshan Tianchi Lake, Turpan, and the Kumtag Desert in Shanshan, Yili, Sayram Lake, Kanas, and Koktokay.
Southern Xinjiang has the Taklamakan Desert, the world’s tenth-largest desert. There is a desert highway that many people want to cross, as well as the Xinjiang Populus euphratica forest, the Tarim Populus euphratica, and the extreme challenge of the Lop Nur no man’s land.
