Hainan Island has a spring-like climate throughout the year, which is a well-known fact. When the northern regions are covered with snow, Hainan, located at 18 degrees north latitude, is still filled with the sounds of birds and the fragrances of flowers. Hainan Island has a tropical monsoon climate and a tropical marine climate, with lush greenery everywhere and fresh air. There is no scorching heat in summer, and it is warm and spring-like in winter. The average temperature in Hainan during winter is above 18℃, making it a rare island resort in China that is suitable for vacationing all year round and in all weather conditions.

  Preparations before departure

Before traveling, check and bring your valid ID card. For children under 16, bring their household register. For those over 16, bring their ID card and keep it safe during the trip.

  2

You can bring digital cameras and camcorders. Prepare enough batteries, film, tapes, and chargers. Don’t be stingy with your film. Take as many photos as you can, or you will regret it when you get home. Additionally, when playing on the beach, be careful not to let sand or seawater enter your camera or camcorder equipment.

  3

If it’s cloudy, windy, or rainy in Hainan Island, the temperature will be relatively low. In winter, the temperature difference between day and night is also large. Prepare some warm clothes. However, if it’s sunny, the temperature will rise immediately, so try to bring cool and breathable clothes for outdoors.

  4

When traveling in Hainan, wear sports shoes instead of leather shoes. Bring sunscreen products, including sunglasses, UV-blocking sun umbrellas, and sunscreen lotion.

When you arrive in Sanya, you will definitely want to go swimming. Be sure to prepare your swimsuit, swimming goggles, and earplugs. Bring extra clothes, sun umbrellas, sun hats, sunglasses, and beach slippers. The sunshine in Sanya is intense, so skincare products are necessary. Sunscreen is a must. You can also bring after-sun calming lotion, moisturizing spray, and whitening face masks. Shampoo and conditioner are also essential. Seawater is harmful to hair, and the ones provided by hotels are of inferior quality.

Prepare some medications as well. Antihistamines, cold medicine, antidiarrheal medicine, painkillers, wound dressings, eyedrops, sterile cotton balls, etc. Also, if you plan to eat seafood, bring some norfloxacin and berberine. Don’t forget to bring your mobile phone, camera, and chargers. Another key point to remember is to bring enough cash. Apart from hotels and larger shopping malls, credit cards are hardly used in Sanya, and it is difficult to find ATMs.

  Accommodation

I recommend staying in Dadonghai. Sanya has three bays: Dadonghai, Sanya Bay, and Yalong Bay. The advantage of Dadonghai is that it is close to the urban area, and shopping, dining, traveling, and entertainment are all convenient. There are fireworks on the beach at night. It is lively yet peaceful and economical. Yalong Bay is a very beautiful bay with layered sea colors and whiter beaches. You can also pick up seashells, and there are many sand crabs at night. However, the consumption at Yalong Bay hotels is also relatively very high. It is far from the urban area (over 30 kilometers), and shopping, dining, and traveling are inconvenient. If money allows, you can even consider spending a night in the cottages on Wuzhizhou Island.

Generally speaking, those who take a self-guided tour to Sanya have to book their hotels through travel agencies. The reason is simple: it’s cheaper. However, the hotel prices in Sanya are never as clear as the sky there. The price difference between the high and low seasons is huge, and the standards of hotels ranging from two to five stars vary greatly. If you want to enjoy yourself, I suggest you choose a five-star hotel. From beach bathing areas to freshwater swimming pools, as well as other facilities for dining, entertainment, and leisure, they are all available, like a condensed version of Sanya.

  Transportation

  1. Sanya Phoenix International Airport is 20 kilometers away from the urban area. There are buses directly to the urban area from the airport (fare: 10 yuan), and the taxi fare should be controlled around 35 yuan. Taxi drivers who pick up passengers at the airport will enthusiastically introduce free tours and how great the attractions are. Believe that ‘there is no free lunch in the world.’ They will lead you around to spend money (on tickets, meals, shopping, and they may receive commissions).

  2. The taxi fares in Sanya are negotiable, and don’t let them use the meter. Basically, the fare within Sanya City is 5 yuan (capped at 7 yuan), 10 yuan from Dadonghai to the urban area, 30 yuan from Yalong Bay to Dadonghai, and no more than 40 yuan from Dadonghai to the Ends of the Earth and the Rims of the Sea. Most taxi drivers overcharge, so you need to haggle boldly. Don’t let the hotel bellhops call a taxi for you; walk out of the hotel and hail a passing taxi on the road.

  3. Make full use of buses. There is only one main street in the urban area (Jiefang Road), running north-south. It can be used as a coordinate axis to reach major attractions, shopping, and dining destinations. To truly experience a city, take the bus.

  4. Yalong Bay, Dadonghai, the Ends of the Earth and the Rims of the Sea, Nanshan (Nanhai Guanyin), and Dadiao Dongtian. There is a blue tourist bus that does not have a route number marked on it. It runs every ten minutes and charges by segment. It is best not to take human-powered rickshaws or motorcycles (they are even more unscrupulous than taxi drivers).

  Recreation

  1

This is the dividing line between the tropics and subtropics and is also an excellent diving base. The surrounding sea area of the island is clear and transparent with a visibility of 6 to 27 meters.

Colorful corals hide under the sea. It is one of the few islands in the world that does not have rocks or pebbles mixed in. It is an excellent diving base in China.

  2

Xinglong Tropical Southern Medicine Botanical Garden

An ideal base for visiting tropical and subtropical medicinal plants. You can also see some rare plants like the ‘anti-coagulation tree’.

  3

  Coconut Field Ancient Village

It showcases the original lifestyle of Hainan’s Miao people from a unique perspective, allowing visitors to experience traditional handicrafts that have been passed down for thousands of years and understand silverware culture.

  5

  Yalong Bay National Resort District

The beach area here has sand as white as snow, as fine as flour, and as soft as cotton. It not only boasts China’s charming bays and beaches but also has large and intact soft coral communities and a variety of hard corals, tropical fish, and other marine life in the nearby waters. It is one of the best scenic spots for underwater sightseeing tourism in China.Complete Hainan Travel Guide, taking you to explore the entire Hainan!
