Kanas is a Mongolian term meaning ‘beautiful and fertile, mysterious and unpredictable.’ It is located in the deep mountains and dense forests of Burqin County, Altay Prefecture, Xinjiang, and is one of the most beautiful scenic belts in northern Xinjiang and one of China’s most beautiful autumn destinations.

Kanas Lake captivates people with its mysterious lake monster, changing lake colors, and dazzling natural scenery. The lake water often changes colors with the seasons and weather, creating a dreamlike and enchanting lakeside scenery.

The surroundings of Kanas Lake are mixed primitive forests of spruce, fir, and Siberian larch. The sunny slopes are covered with dense grass. Different plant communities are clearly layered. Every autumn, the colorful forests and trees compete for brilliance, presenting a diverse display. The changing clouds above the forest and the winding Kanas River constitute Xinjiang’s most dreamlike autumn.

Kanas Lake is an inland freshwater lake in the Kanas scenic area. The lake water comes from glacial meltwater from surrounding snow-capped mountains and local precipitation. With an altitude of 1,374 meters and an area of 45 square kilometers, it is an alpine lake formed by Quaternary glaciation and is one of China’s deep lakes. Kanas Lake has a crescent shape, and its surroundings are covered with lush coniferous and broad-leaved mixed forests, connected to the vast mountainous grasslands. It has been rated as China’s most beautiful lake by Chinese National Geography magazine.

Shenxian Bay, Moon Bay, and Wolong Bay are collectively known as the ‘Three Bays,’ which are landmark attractions of Kanas and one of the must-visit places when coming to Kanas. The first is Shenxian Bay, a shallow beach formed by Kanas Lake at a low and gentle mountain stream area. The lake surface shines with fine light under sunlight, as if countless pearls are scattered at will. Therefore, it is also called ‘Pearl Beach.’ Coupled with the frequent misty clouds, mountain scenery, lake water, and trees reflecting each other, it feels like being in a fairyland, hence the name Shenxian Bay.

  II. The Gods’ Private Reserve—Hemu

Hemu Village in Xinjiang is located in an intermountain graben basin at the confluence of the Kanas River and Hemu River, and it is the northernmost township in western China.

Hemu Village is most famous for its dazzling autumn colors. Cooking smoke rises slowly among the autumn foliage, forming a dreamlike belt of fog, resembling a fairyland.

In the morning, on the viewing platform of Hemu Village, you can enjoy the sunrise, snow-capped peaks, and trickling streams in the distance, while taking in a close view of the Tuwa people’s homes. The sunrise, morning fog, wooden houses, and Hemu River constitute a fascinating fairy tale world.

The most beautiful season for Hemu scenery is from mid-September to early October each year. Due to factors such as latitude and altitude, autumn arrives here earlier than in the hinterland. During the golden autumn, the forests here are dyed in layers of colors, creating a splendid and colorful view. No matter where you look from, you will see a warm and bright golden yellow—rivers, wooden houses, cooking smoke, birch forests, and distant snow-capped mountains.
