Introduction to Kanas Lake:
Kanas Lake (Kanas Lake): National AAAAA-level tourist attraction, National Geological Park, National Forest Park, Chinese Nature Reserve, National Natural Heritage, National Low-Carbon Tourism Experimental Zone, China’s Most Beautiful Lake. Kanas Lake, with snow-capped peaks towering above green slopes and dark forests, and breathtaking lake and mountain scenery, is praised as a ‘fairyland on earth, the garden of gods’.
"Kanas" is a Mongolian word meaning "beautiful and mysterious lake". Kanas Lake is located in the north of Burqin County, Altay Prefecture, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. The lake water comes from glacier meltwater and local precipitation from mountains such as Kuitun and Friendship Peak. The lake surface is at an altitude of 1,374 meters, with an area of 45.73 square kilometers. The lake has a maximum depth of 188.5 meters at an elevation of 1,181.5 meters, and a water storage capacity of 5.38 billion cubic meters. It is China’s deepest moraine dammed lake, a high-altitude lake and inland freshwater lake nestled in the dense forests of the Altay Mountains.
The Kanas Lake scenic area integrates spectacular natural landscapes such as mountains, rivers, forests, lakes, and grasslands; historical and cultural relics such as Genghis Khan’s Westward Expedition Army Reviewing Terrace and ancient rock paintings; and the unique folk customs of the Mongolian Tuwa people. It has major attractions such as Camel’s Hump Bay, Color-Changing Lake, Dragon’s Nest Bay, and Fish Viewing Terrace, and has high values for tourism, nature conservation, scientific research, and history and culture.
Kanas Lake has several wonders. One is the kilometer-long deadwood dike formed by floating wood in the lake being blown upstream by strong valley winds and piled up upstream; the second is the giant ‘water monster’ in the lake, which often drags horses drinking by the lake into the water, adding a touch of mystery to Kanas. Some people also believe it is caused by a large red fish (Hucho taimen), a local specialty; the third is a rare sight that appears only after the rain clears – the Kanas sea of clouds and Buddha’s light.
Best Viewing Time for Kanas:
Best Travel Time for Kanas: The best time to visit Kanas is in June and September every year.
In June, Kanas is a season of blooming wildflowers. At this time, peony and willow gentian are everywhere, red flowers cover the ground, golden lotuses, tulips, and buttercups are golden yellow, and large patches of delphiniums, irises, and wild carrot umbrella-shaped flowers echo the blue sky, forming a poetic picture.
In September, Kanas is a golden yellow. Deep green hillsides, patches of yellow branches and red leaves, forests dyed in layers of colors, eyes full of gold, birches, Korean pines, firs, and other trees presenting golden yellow, orange red, and dark green intertwined, set against the backdrop of green mountains and white snow, it is definitely a mesmerizing scene for photographers of all levels, dazzling and intoxicating.
