It is often said that the peak season in Xinjiang is from May to October. In fact, Xinjiang is really vast, and there are beautiful landscapes throughout the four seasons, all of which are naturally stunning without artificial decoration.
Before departing for Xinjiang, let me first tell you when Xinjiang is the most beautiful. Choose a suitable time to visit Xinjiang this year.
January – February: Hemu Snow Village, Kanas Snow Village, Kashgar in Southern Xinjiang, and Muztag Ata Glacier. During this time of winter, there are the fewest people in Xinjiang, and the snowy scenery is also very beautiful.
March – April: Be aware that spring is coming to Xinjiang. This is a good time to see apricot blossoms. Apricot Blossom Valley, apricot blossoms in Tashkurgan County (Datong Township, Bandier Township), Nalati Apricot Blossom Valley… The apricot blossom season varies slightly each year, so please refer to specific notices. It is probably around April. Last time we went, the leaves had already sprouted.
May: Southern Xinjiang gradually enters summer, while Northern Xinjiang enters spring. Kanas has not yet entered spring and requires waiting for the grass to turn green. At this time, you can see the flowers blooming in Yili, and the scenery varies depending on the flowering season. Therefore, May is recommended for visiting Southern Xinjiang or Yili.
June – August: Xinjiang is fully open. All regions are great destinations. The scenery is excellent!!! It is recommended to visit the Duku Highway, where the scenery is superb!
September: It is not advisable to visit Yili at this time because once the grasslands in Yili turn yellow, they are not as beautiful. Major attractions are in Kanas and Southern Xinjiang.
October: The birch forest in Kanas and the Populus euphratica in Southern Xinjiang. After mid-October, it is not advisable to visit Kanas as winter is approaching.
November – December: Same as January – February
Where to have fun in Xinjiang
Regarding which is more fun, Southern Xinjiang or Northern Xinjiang, it is said that Southern Xinjiang is known for its culture, while Northern Xinjiang is known for its nature. Xinjiang is divided by the Tianshan Mountains, with the north being Northern Xinjiang and the south being Southern Xinjiang.
Relatively speaking, Northern Xinjiang has slightly more abundant rainfall and less severe desertification than Southern Xinjiang. Major attractions in Northern Xinjiang include Tianshan Tianchi, Turpan, the Kumtag Desert in Shanshan, Yili, Sayram Lake, Kanas, and Koktokay.

Southern Xinjiang has China’s largest desert, the Taklamakan Desert, which ranks tenth in the world. It is home to the desert highway that many people want to cross, as well as Xinjiang’s largest Populus euphratica forest in Tarim and the Lop Nur, an uninhabited area featured in Extreme Challenge.Lop Nur, however, Kashgar stands out as the most ethnically diverse and culturally rich place.
