10 Best Routes to Visit Xinjiang in the Second Half of the Year
Northern and Southern Xinjiang Loop Route
▌ Route Overview
The route first circles the Junggar Basin before entering the beautiful region outside the Great Wall in Xinjiang—the Ili Valley. It then proceeds to the Bayinbuluke Grasslands in the heart of the Tianshan Mountains, crosses mountain passes, traverses Gobi deserts, and steps into the folk customs-rich Turpan Basin, finally returning to Urumqi. The entire journey lasts for 11 days and covers nearly 4,000 kilometers. Along the way, it crosses Gobi deserts (General Gobi), spans deserts (Gurbantunggut Desert), scales snow-capped mountains (Tianshan Mountains), and rides freely across grasslands (Nalati and Bayinbuluke Grasslands).
Northern Xinjiang, the Junggar Basin, the Ili Valley, the Tianshan Mountains, and the Altay Mountains are all legendary yet little-known regions. For thousands of years, the Saka, the Dayuezhi, the Wusun, and the Mongols have written the long song of history with their iron-clad horses and golden spears.
Today, as I revisit this ancestral land, I see Kazakh lads, simple and unpretentious, waving long whips to herd cattle and sheep. White yurts are sending up smoke in the distance, and diligent Kazakh women are burning fragrant milk tea to welcome the return of love. The god’s backyard garden, Kanas, Baihaba, and Hemu are welcoming visitors from all directions with a picturesque haven like the Eastern Switzerland.

Crossing Lop Nur
▌ Route Overview
Cross China’s Sea of Death – Lop Nur, follow the ancient Silk Road to trace the ancient Loulan Kingdom that existed three thousand years ago, come into close contact with Loulan beauties, and feel the desolation and awe of the historical and cultural significance of the Silk Road. There is a possibility of close encounters with wild camels, which are national first-class protected wild animals. Follow in the footsteps of explorers and experience the charm of the Gobi Desert.
With a wave of time’s hand, the sea turned into a desert. The once bustling fishing boats are now only represented by a few river traces; the lush grasslands that once nourished cattle and sheep have turned into vast deserts. Heroes once took their beauties away, rode off into the distance, leaving piles of gold coins and jade pendants behind. Thus, the lonely smoke of the curtain falling disappeared.

Kanas East-West Grand Loop
▌ Route Overview
The seasons change with five-colored scenery, silent and peaceful ancient villages. Ride a horse along the ancient horse trails, gallop on the grasslands, and listen to the wind whistling in your ears; in the mountains, see snow-capped peaks surrounding, flowers blooming everywhere, and eagles soaring overhead; walk on flowers, seeking out those uninhabited secret realms; camp under a sky full of stars, light a bonfire, and sing those ancient ballads; when you look up at the quiet starry sky, the mundane world is far away on the other side of the globe.
