Checking in at the ‘China-Kazakhstan Border Grand Canyon’ and experiencing the autumn scenery at the Baihaba border

The ‘China-Kazakhstan Border Grand Canyon’ is located in the northwest of the country, at the border between China and Kazakhstan. It is only 15 kilometers away from Baihaba, known as the ‘First Village in the Northwest’, and is a must-visit destination on the way to Baihaba. At the bottom of the Grand Canyon lies the Akhaba River, the border river between China and Kazakhstan. The canyon and valley are covered with birch trees. The border area is strictly managed, and no one except some herdsmen is allowed to enter to protect the birch trees from being cut down. For a long time, the birch forests on both sides of the border river have flourished. Even the large number of fallen birch trees lie quietly on the shore throughout the year, leaving us with the most pristine natural scenery.

Witnessing the ‘Great Migration of Cattle and Sheep’ in the Altay Region

During the golden autumn season, the Kazakh herdsmen in the Altay region of Xinjiang have kicked off the great migration of cattle and sheep for the autumn season. The life of the Kazakhs is closely integrated with this migration. For thousands of years, the Kazakhs, who are predominantly nomadic, have migrated following water and grass. Migration refers to the orderly transfer of livestock to different pastures by Kazakh herdsmen based on the growth cycle of forage. In autumn, as the pastures in the summer grazing areas gradually wither and turn yellow, herdsmen need to transfer their cattle and sheep to lower-altitude, warmer winter pastures to survive the cold winter. In spring and summer, they return to the summer pastures, and this annual cycle has become a way of life passed down through generations of Kazakhs.

Listen to the Howls of the [Urho Devil’s City]

Thus, the modern sculpture-like [Urho Yadan Landform] was created. The fierce winds of the Junggar Basin weave through the Devil’s City, colliding back and forth, occasionally transmitting demonic howls, from which the name乌尔禾魔鬼城 (Urho Devil’s City) originated.Autumn Viewing Guide in Kanas, Xinjiang: Autumn Photography Tour in Northern Xinjiang
