So, what places in Xinjiang are worth visiting?
NO.1 Sayram Lake
Sayram Lake
The Last Tear of the Atlantic
Sayram is a Kazakh word meaning ‘wish’, commonly known as ‘Santai Haizi’. The lake is located in Bole City at an altitude of 2073m.
Sayram Lake is a cold-water lake with calm and azure waters. All around the lake is silence, with only the sound of the wind sweeping across the grassland and hills and the occasional bleating of cattle and sheep heard. The grassland by the lake is an excellent summer pasture, and local Mongolian and Kazakh herdsmen will hold the Nadam Fair here from late July to early August every year.
In late October, herdsmen will migrate out of here, and the scenery here in winter, covered in silvery snow, is also very beautiful.
NO.2 Kanas Lake
Kanas Lake
Kanas Lake is located in Altay Prefecture, Xinjiang. Its crescent shape is speculated to have been formed by the accumulation of water in the valley blocked by intense ancient glacial movement.
There are two reasons why Kanas Lake is famous—its unique natural scenery and the legend of the water monster. Following Youxiake to climb up the Fish Viewing Terrace, you can overlook the panoramic view of Kanas Lake and also search for traces of the water monster. At the foot of the mountain lies the quaint village of the Tuwa people, with houses made of locally sourced wooden materials, resembling the style of a Swiss town.
NO.3 Kalajun Grassland
Kalajun Prairie
The Aerial Grassland on Mount Tianshan
Kalajun is a Kazakh word meaning ‘black prairie’. It is a typical mountainous meadow type of grassland with gentle undulations and an expansive view.
From May to August, the grassland is lush and green. During midsummer, there is abundant rainfall and plenty of sunshine, with various wildflowers blooming all over the mountains like stars. Following the guide to Kalajun Grassland in summer is like stepping into a sea of flowers, instantly cooling off the summer heat.
NO.4 Bayinbrooke Wetland
Bayinbrooke Wetland
A Source of Fertility
Bayinbuluke is located in the intermountain basin in the middle of the Tianshan Mountains, surrounded by snowy mountains, and is one of the important animal husbandry bases in Xinjiang.
The Mongolian name Bayinbuluke means ‘abundant spring’. As far as the eye can see, there are icy mountains, snowy peaks, blue skies, white clouds, pine forests, the surging Gongnais River, scattered yurts, green grass and wildflowers covering the mountains, and sheepdots scattered all over the hills like pearls, all forming a beautiful picture that makes people feel at ease and happy.
NO.5 Hemu Village
Hemu Village
God’s Private Reserve
Hemu Village is a concentrated living area for the Tuvans. It is famous for its intoxicating autumn scenery with red leaves covering the mountains. Smoke rises slowly from chimneys amid the autumn scenery, forming a fantastical smoke band like a fairyland.
From the small hills surrounding Hemu Village, you can overlook the panoramic view of Hemu Village and the Hemu River: a lonely valley, a small bridge over flowing water, and horse herders raising dust as they pass through the jungle…
NO.6 Baihaba Village
Baihaba Village
First Village in the Northwest
On the way to Baihaba, you will pass a
NO.8 Kuqa Grand Canyon in Tianshan Mountains
Tianshan Mountain Canyon
Call of the Distant Mountains
Tianshan Mountain Grand Canyon, also known as Keziliya Grand Canyon, is located in the north of Kuqa County, Aksu Prefecture, Xinjiang. It stretches about 5.5 kilometers east to west and is formed by red-brown rocks eroded by wind and rain. The canyon winds through secluded paths, with mountains taking on various forms, peaks reaching the sky, and valleys within valleys.
NO.9 Xiate Valley
Southbound and Northbound under the Father of Tianshan Mountains
The Xiate Ancient Road was historically a transportation post between Ili and Aksu. It starts from the Xiate Pasture in Zhaosu County, Ili Kazak Autonomous Prefecture in the north and extends south to Pochengzi in Wensu County, Aksu Prefecture. It is a famous and perilous ancient pass on the Silk Road. The Xiate Ancient Road carries too much heavy history and has had too many dazzling glories.
Today, the Xiate Ancient Road is a high-risk hiking and exploration route combining archaeology and adventure. Crossing the fragmented Muzart Glacier, ice cracks, glaciers, and the turbulent Namuzart River are all tests for explorers.
NO.10 Colorful Beach
Colorful Beach
Colorful Riverbank
Colorful Beach is located in Burqin County in northern Xinjiang, China, and is an important stop on the way to the Kanas Lake scenic area. Its landform features are particularly special, belonging to the cliff type with undulating mountains and changing colors. Due to the long-term erosion by rivers and strong winds, colorful rocks have formed, hence its name Colorful Beach.
Due to the combined effects of wind and other natural factors, the rocks here have various contours. Whenever illuminated by sunshine, the Colorful Beach becomes breathtakingly beautiful, colorful, and fascinating.
