You won’t know how vast China is until you visit Xinjiang, and you won’t appreciate the beauty of Xinjiang until you visit Ili. Xinjiang’s vast territory and abundant resources are its greatest advantages. Because it is vast, it boasts many unique landscapes, including snow-capped mountains, lakes, grasslands, deserts, Kanas-like landforms, and various sweet fruits. If you don’t want to go abroad, Xinjiang is a great choice.
The attractions in Xinjiang are centered around Urumqi, extending in the east, south, west, and north directions. I will first introduce the most classic attractions in each direction to give you a preliminary understanding of their distribution.
1. Around Urumqi:
Hongshan Park, Shuimo Park, Erdaoqiao International Bazaar, Tianshan Tianchi, Turpan, Nanshan Pasture; recommended stay: 1-2 days.
2. North Route:
Koktokay, Colorful Beach, Colorful City,巴哈村 (Baha Village, translated as White Haba in some contexts), Hemu, Kanas, Urho Devil’s City; recommended stay: 5-6 days.
3. South Route:
Korla, Luntai, Kuqa, Kashgar, Xiangfei Tomb, Dawakun Desert, Pamir Plateau; recommended stay: 7-8 days.
4. West Route:
Sayram Lake, Khorgos Port, Yining, Nalati, Bayinbuluke; recommended stay: 4-5 days.
5. East Route:
Shanshan, Kumtag Desert; recommended stay: 1-2 days.
Xinjiang is generally divided into Southern Xinjiang and Northern Xinjiang. The North Route, West Route, and East Route mentioned above are collectively called Northern Xinjiang, where most of the major attractions are concentrated and are the most popular routes for tourists.
Highly recommended
Xinjiang has a vast territory, so it is highly recommended to rent a car for sightseeing. There are many outdoor clubs in Xinjiang with a full range of vehicle types. The drivers are all experienced, familiar with the road conditions and attractions, and won’t waste time. They offer customized itineraries, which can save a lot of money and ensure a great experience. Some friends say they like to self-drive, but I don’t recommend it because Xinjiang is too big. Driving for a whole day can be very tiring, and you may not even have the mood to enjoy the scenery the next day.
Tianshan Tianchi is a famous attraction closest to Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang. If you only have 1-2 days in Urumqi, I suggest you set aside a day to visit Tianshan Tianchi, known as the ‘Jade Pool’.

5. [Grape Valley] A cool world at the foot of Flaming Mountain, with grapevines everywhere along the streams.
