Pearls of the Tianshan Mountains: Big and Small Dragon Lakes
About 120 kilometers from Kuqa, deep in the Tianshan Mountains, there are two alpine lakes. They are called the Big Dragon Lake and Small Dragon Lake, and the scenery is very beautiful and charming. At the foot of the mountain, there are spruces and cypresses, green grass, and the yurts of herdsmen dotted around. Occasionally, you can also see snowcocks, goits, and snow leopards.
A pure and azure lake reflecting dotted white sheep, yellow yaks, and red bay horses…
The mountains here stretch east and west, like a roaring army of horses and soldiers, or like roaring waves…
The Big and Small Dragon Lakes are like two glittering gems that complement each other. Here, you can feel the tranquility and holiness away from the hustle and bustle.
Here there are grasslands, hot springs, snowy peaks, and rivers. The grass is lush, and the water flows abundantly.
Here there are the Tangbula Grassland, which resembles a fairyland on earth with snow-capped spruces and high mountains accompanied by white clouds; the Mengkete Grassland, which offers a different scene at every step and is picturesque, with 19 streams originating from it; and small, exquisite, and crystal-clear alpine lakes known as ‘Little Tianchi’, among others.
Kanas
A place you won’t get tired of visiting even after a thousand times!
Kanas Lake in Xinjiang is located on the southern slope of the scenic Friendship Peak. Within the Kanas National Nature Reserve, which covers an area of about 250,000 hectares, the majestic Altai Mountains stretch across northern Xinjiang. Its main peak, Friendship Peak, is covered with snow all year round and is one of the lowest-altitude modern glaciers in China.
The Altai Mountains where Kanas Lake is located were uplifted due to tectonic movements. Before that, most of the area was ocean, and later the Altai Mountains were formed due to tectonic uplift. Kanas Lake was formed as a glacier-dammed lake, so people have always likened Kanas Lake to the ‘last tear of the ancient Pacific Ocean’.
