Xinjiang photography
Xinjiang photography refers to tourism and photography routes mainly in Xinjiang, China, as well as surrounding western provinces and cities such as Tibet, Gansu, and Qinghai, connecting Central Asia, Nepal, Russia, and other countries.
Major photography spots include: Urumqi International Bazaar, Kashgar Old Town, Kanas Lake, Tekes Eight Trigrams City, Nalati, Koktokay, Tianshan Grand Canyon, Sayram Lake, Bayinbuluke, Zhaosu Grassland, Karajun Grassland, Heavenly Lake in Tianshan, Tuergen Wild Apricot Valley, Yili Lavender, Yili Swan Lake, Jiaohe Ancient City, Karez Wells, Khorgos Port, Hongshan Grand Canyon, Dushanzi Grand Canyon, Xiate Ancient Road, Urho Devil’s City, Hemu Village, Baihaba, Colorful Beach, Taklamakan Desert, Shanshan Desert, Hami Grand Canal, Loulan Ancient City, and Lop Nor Village.
The Bayinbuluke Grassland is located in the mountainous basin in the middle of the southern foot of the Tianshan Mountains, surrounded by snow-capped mountains, and it is the second-largest grassland in China. Bayinbuluke, in Mongolian, means "a never-failing sweet spring". The famous Swan Lake is situated on this grassland. Every spring, when the ice and snow melt and flowers bloom, swans from India, Pakistan, and even distant countries along the shores of the Black Sea, Red Sea, and Mediterranean Sea fly thousands of miles in flocks to Bayinbuluke to inhabit and breed. The vast and boundless grassland, with white sheep flocks scattered like pearls, coupled with the snow-capped mountains under the blue sky in the distance, give people a feeling of magnanimity and openness. Walking up a long grassy slope, you will be greeted by a picturesque scene: a slender blue river winding its way into the distance. This is the Nine-Bend and Eighteen-Turn Reach, the source of the Kaitun River, which makes the grassland fertile and rich and also nurtures the large wetlands in Xinjiang.

Koktokay, in Kazakh, means "green jungle", and in Mongolian, it means "blue river". Koktokay is not a sea, but it is a vast ocean of nature’s life. Locals believe this land is blessed by the gods and is full of spirituality. The murmuring river, the clear lake surface, every flower, tree, grass, and leaf are so serene. Koktokay in autumn is especially beautiful, beauty that touches the heart. Golden birch trees are dyed in layers of yellow, reflected in the water, rippling with the waves. There are also two "couple trees" here. In autumn, one turns yellow while the other remains green, complementing each other and resembling two people leaning on each other. At night, Koktokay feels like wandering in the Milky Way, with stars twinkling, creating a magnificent scene.
Sayram Lake, anciently known as the "Pure Sea", is located in the Northern Tianshan Mountains within Bole City, Bortala Prefecture, Xinjiang, and is known as the "Bright Pearl on the Tianshan Mountains" and the "Last Tear of the Atlantic". Upon entering the Sayram Lake scenic area, the first thing that catches the eye is a fairyland-like cloud belt floating in the deep blue and pure sky, breathtakingly beautiful. Sayram Lake lies quietly asleep amidst this misty scenery. Sayram Lake is one of the famous color-changing lakes. As the waves and the sky change, the lake water takes on different colors, as if using up all the blues in the world. The vast lake and mountain scenery are seamlessly integrated. Every angle, every moment, every scene attracts different light and clouds, creating a unique beauty, like an endless ink painting, truly embodying the realm described in the poem, "The Heavenly Lake lies atop the mountain, a hundred-li mirror reflecting all things".
You don’t need to go to Provence, France, or Furano, Japan. In Huocheng, Xinjiang, there is a 20,000-mu lavender field blooming all over the mountains. From June to August each year, vast fields of lavender bloom in competition, rising and falling with the wind, with a delightful fragrance. The scent of these light blue-purple flowers can be smelled from as far as ten li away. What’s more amazing is that standing inside a vast lavender field, the fragrance remains subtle and gentle. As you walk leisurely among the flowers, your clothes will retain the fragrance. Unlike the ultimate romance of French lavender, the lavender in Huocheng emits a distant and serene aura, faint to the extreme, yet etched in the heart.
The Tarim Populus euphratica Forest Park in Xinjiang, located in Luntai County, Xinjiang, boasts the largest and most intact area of naturally preserved Populus euphratica forests. Populus euphratica possesses immense vitality—it lives for a thousand years without dying, stands for a thousand years after death, and remains undecayed for another thousand years. In the vast desert, sturdy trunks stand tall, and even when dried up, new growth continues to sprout from their branches. In this endless stretch of yellow sand, life is given a tenacious new definition. Take a vintage train ride across hundreds of kilometers of Gobi desert, weaving through a golden landscape that stretches across the mountains. Looking up, the dazzling golden hue lights up the entire desert, creating a breathtaking scene!
Tashkurgan means ‘Stone City’ in Uyghur, named after the ancient stone-built castle to the north of the town. Stone City is located in southern China, east of the Pamir Plateau and west of the Kunlun Mountains. It is a clean world separated by thousands of peaks and valleys, serene and peaceful, with its own unique charm. This city of the western eagle has only two types of terrain—mountains and valleys, connecting three countries and four 8,000-meter snow-capped peaks towering above. On a clear day, looking north from Tashkurgan County, you can clearly see the majestic figure of Mount Muztagh Ata among the
Hemu is a border town full of fairy tale charm, located in the northern part of Xinjiang’s Burqin County, bordering Mongolia, Russia, and Kazakhstan. It sits in a large valley surrounded by mountains. In autumn, no matter where you look in Hemu Township, you will see a warm and bright golden color—rivers, wooden houses, chimney smoke, birch forests, and people herding on the Hemu Bridge. At dusk, the birch forests and fields of sunflowers on the banks shine with golden light under the setting sun, reflecting a beautiful, serene, and colorful Russian oil painting. In winter, Hemu is particularly pure and white, with endless stretches of snow, making one feel like they are in a kingdom of ice and snow.
