The Duku Highway, the highway from Dushanzi to Kuqa. It is a 561-kilometer-long highway connecting North and South Xinjiang. It crosses towering mountains and deep valleys, connecting many ethnic minority inhabited areas. Its completion has shortened the distance between North and South Xinjiang by nearly half from the original more than 1000 kilometers, making it a monument in China’s highway construction history.
To build this highway, tens of thousands of soldiers struggled for 10 years, among which 168 road-building soldiers sacrificed their precious lives.
Scenic Areas and Attractions:
At the southern end of the Duku Highway, people will also appreciate the magnificent Kiziliya Mountain Landscape Area, where the red rock forest is magnificent. Not only that, the nearby Tianshan Mysterious Grand Canyon Scenic Area also shocks visitors with its deep and perilous winding paths.
The Kuqa River has been accompanying one side of the highway. When the highway passes through the
Between the mountains flow rivers, and gentle pastures cover the hillsides. The evening glow falls on the grass, covering the pasture with a layer of gold. Shepherds enclose their flocks with stones and wooden fences, light fires in their yurts, and curling smoke rises slowly… This kind of plateau pastoral scene will always inadvertently catch your eye along the way, filling your thoughts with poetry.
At the same time, you cannot help but hold your breath repeatedly due to the dangerousness of the road. A large portion of the cliffs along the roadside form reverse slopes of no less than 90 degrees with the ground, like being chopped by a knife, with a relative height difference of over 100 meters. The Longchi Falls, which are suspended in three sections halfway up the mountain, as well as the Large and Small Longchi Lakes, which are emerald-green and teeming with waterbirds, are all hidden in the Tianshan Mountains’ hinterland at an altitude of over 2000 meters in the middle of the Duku Highway.
Continuing onward through here, one will see the magnificent pine forests along the way, and also China’s second-largest grassland—the Bayin布鲁克 Grassland. There, the grass is lush, wildflowers are abundant, and yurts with curling smoke rise into the sky. Every year, large flocks of swans inhabit the lakes there.
In addition, the Nalati Grassland, the Qiaoerma Scenic Area, the Daban passes, the snow-capped mountains, the floating clouds in the mountains, and the highest tunnels in China will all make this journey along this road extraordinary. (Same)
One-third of the Duku Highway is cliffy and steep, and one-fifth of it is located in the perpetual frost zone of high mountains. It crosses nearly ten major rivers of the Tianshan Mountains and four icy passes with snow all year round. Its driving difficulty is imaginable. However, the scenery along the way can only be described as magical. Traveling northeast from Kuqa, where the ancient Kingdom of Kizil was located, along National Highway 217, the mystery of the Duku Highway begins to unfold layer by layer. Along the way, you can enjoy the fiery and dry scenery of the Kizilia Mountains, the mysterious and steep canyon scenery, the dense vegetation and nomadic customs in the hinterland of the Tianshan Mountains, as well as the vast grassland scenery, etc.
Scenic spots along the Duku Highway (from south to north): Kizilia Mountain Landscape, Mysterious Grand Canyon of Tianshan, Big and Small Long Lakes, Tielimaiti Pass, Bayanbulak Grassland, Nalati.
