Day 1: Burqin
Today’s reminder: Take the passenger bus to Kanas in the morning, enter the Hemu scenic area in the afternoon, check in, and then fully enjoy the ethnic customs and beautiful natural scenery of Hemu.
Travel Guide: Hemo Scenic Area is located in Burqin County, Altay Prefecture, northern Xinjiang, about 30 kilometers east of Kanas Lake. It is a small village inhabited by Kazakhs and Tuvas. Most tourists visiting northern Xinjiang will include both Hemo Village and Kanas Lake Scenic Area in their itinerary. All the houses in Hemo Village are simple log cabins scattered across the mountain valley. Local ethnic minorities work in their yards, creating a quaint and peaceful atmosphere. The Hemo River flows beside the village, with crystal-clear, light blue water. Surrounding the village are grasslands, birch forests, and other beautiful landscapes.
Day 2: Kanas
Today’s Memo: Get up early to watch the sunrise over Hemo from the observation deck, then head to Kanas Lake. The beauty of Kanas Lake is so overwhelming that some of it is too much to take in, so I constantly used my camera to capture it. Afterwards, I arrived at Kanas Tuwa Village, a beautiful village composed of original northern Xinjiang log cabins. It is excellent for sightseeing and photography.
Travel Guide: Kanas is located deep in the mountains and dense forests of Burqin County, Altay Prefecture, about 800 kilometers from the capital Urumqi. It is one of Xinjiang’s most famous scenic areas. Some tourists start from Kanas Lake and hike east to Hemo Village (1-2 days), which has become a paradise route for domestic outdoor enthusiasts. Compared to the cultural landscapes of the other two villages, Kanas Lake captivates visitors with its mysterious lake monsters, color-changing waters, and dazzling natural scenery.
Travel Guide: Kanas Tuwa Village is located within Kanas Lake Scenic Area, about 2-3 kilometers south of the lake. It is a small village inhabited by the Tuvas. All the houses here are original northern Xinjiang log cabins. Surrounded by mountains and forests, the scenery here is no less beautiful than the nearby famous villages of Hemo and Baihaba. It is excellent for sightseeing, photography, and experiencing Tuwa folklore.
Day 3: Kanas
Today’s Memo: Take the shuttle bus to tour the famous three bays of Kanas Scenic Area: Shenxian Bay, Moon Bay, and Wolong Bay. Then, head to Baihaba, a small village inhabited by Kazakhs and Tuvas, with attractions such as Zhonghua Forest and the Sino-Kazakh Border Monument.
Travel Guide: Proceeding north from Moon Bay for about 3 kilometers brings you to Shenxian Bay. Shenxian Bay is a shallow beach formed by Kanas Lake in a low and gentle mountain stream area. The Kanas River flows slowly here, dividing the forest and grassland into small islands. It is often shrouded in mist, resembling a fairyland, hence its name ‘Shenxian Bay’.
Travel Guide: Moon Bay is a bend in the Kanas River, located above Wolong Bay. Due to variations in the lakebed elevation, incoming water volume from upstream, and lighting conditions, Moon Bay exhibits magnificent and ever-changing colors. Sandwiched between two mountains to the east and west, the river channel winds along the mountain contours, forming a crescent shape, hence its name Moon Bay.
Travel Guide: Wolong Bay, locally known as Kazan Lake, meaning ‘pot-bottom lake’, is so named because its shape resembles the bottom of a pot. The Kanas River flows through here, and over time, erosion has formed a series of winding river bends. It is also named ‘Wolong Bay’ because its shape resembles a dragon coiled and playing in the water.
