Based on the classics such as "The Classic of Mountains and Seas", "The Record of Emperor Mu’s Tours", and "Bamboo Annals", the play tells the story of the Emperor of Zhou who embarked on a western tour of the world, undergoing numerous hardships before finally fulfilling his pact with the Queen Mother of the West in Kunlun. It depicts a magnificent poem of Chinese people helping and supporting each other and striving forward together.

The large-scale live-action mythological musical "The Pact of Kunlun" has kicked off in Urumqi, Xinjiang. This is the latest work created by Shanshui Festival, with Mr. Mei Shuaiyuan, the founder of China’s live-action performances and chairman of Shanshui Festival, serving as the lead director. The creative team is formidable. The live-action theater of "The Pact of Kunlun" is located in the valley on the east side of the Silk Road Ski Resort in the Nanshan scenic area of Urumqi, integrating the beauty of natural landscapes, the brilliance of art and culture, and the novelty of modern technology. The grand live-action stage combines majestic and solemn Western Zhou Dynasty palace groups with the fairyland of the Western Regions in the same space, embodying realistic and expressive stage effects. The 8,000-square-meter audience area can accommodate more than 3,000 spectators to watch the performance.

As one of Urumqi’s top ten livelihood projects in 2018 and a cultural benefit project in 2019, Kunlun Promise will be presented as a gift in celebration of the 70th anniversary of the founding of New China, sounding the main theme of "upholding national unity and promoting ethnic unity", and showcasing the long-standing history of exchanges and integration between the mainland and borderland people.

Recently, the performance entered its final synthetic rehearsal phase. The director Mr. Mei Shuaiyuan has overall control over the final presentation of the work, with his demanding and rigorous approach to artistic presentation permeating every one of his requirements. He believes that Kunlun Promise is a vibrant work that will take root and thrive in Xinjiang, showcasing the romantic beauty of history and mythology amidst nature.

Kunlun Promise is based on classic texts such as The Classic of Mountains and Seas and the Records of Emperor Mu of Zhou, telling the story of Emperor Jiman of Zhou (Mu of Zhou) fulfilling the promise made by his ancestor Emperor Huangdi and the Goddess of Kunlun, the Goddess of the West. He vowed to trade hearts and traveled thousands of miles to the Western Regions, enduring countless hardships, before finally fulfilling his Kunlun appointment with the Goddess of the West, resonating with the harmonious sound of gold and jade, and winning the hearts of the people.

Mr. Mei Shuaiyuan said that Landscape Ceremony prefers themes with grand historical narratives, incorporating the grandeur of dreams and realistic dramatic conflicts, the call of poetry and distant places, and the ultimate expression of patriotism into natural settings to create content-driven performances that awaken ancient Chinese stories long dormant on the ancient land.Ticket prices and seating arrangements for "The Pact of Kunlun" in Xinjiang, reservation hotline for "The Pact of Kunlun"

The story of Emperor Mu of Zhou and the Goddess of the West’s thousand-year appointment has been widely circulated in China. "The Fairy Queen opens her embroidered window by the Jade Pool, and the song of Yellow Bamboo echoes with sorrow through the earth. The eight horses run thirty thousand li a day, why doesn’t Emperor Mu return again?" Tang Dynasty poet Li Shangyin’s seven-character quatrain "Jade Pool" interprets the legend of the Kunlun appointment between the Goddess of the West and Emperor Mu of Zhou.

"Kunlun Promise is a historical mythology drama with both historically accurate and mythical legendary parts. The mythical part of the story is filled with poetic and romantic overtones. The historical part is grounded, whether it be ancient bronze ware or historical records, we can find traces of the ancient past," said Mr. Mei Shuaiyuan.Ticket prices and seating arrangements for "The Pact of Kunlun" in Xinjiang, reservation hotline for "The Pact of Kunlun"

According to the Records of Emperor Mu of Zhou, Emperor Mu of Zhou was the fifth emperor of the Western Zhou Dynasty. He appointed Zao Fu as his charioteer. Zao Fu excelled in driving chariots, and he tamed eight divine horses—Red Steed, Steed of Thief, White Justice, Over Wheel, Mountain Boy, Canal Yellow, Hua Liu, and Green Ear—in Taolin Forest, using them to pull Emperor Mu’s chariot on his western tour. Emperor Mu of Zhou embarked from Haojing (today’s Xi’an, Shaanxi Province), crossed the Tianshan Mountains, ascended Kunlun, and met the Goddess of the West in mythology.

History is like poetry, legends are like dreams. Thousands of years later, the Kunlun mythology unfolds atop the mountains. Kunlun Promise will unveil the dust-laden memories, bringing the mysterious ancient mythology back to life on the Western Regions, showcasing the historically interconnected cultures and the deep and enduring friendships among people from all over the country, and resonating through the heavens and earth with the harmonious sound of gold and jade that echoes for millennia.
