[Introduction to Kashgar]
Kashgar is a city I like during my Xinjiang trip. The city’s tourism slogan is, ‘Not visiting Kashgar is like not visiting Xinjiang.’ This city in the west of China is smaller than Urumqi but more charming than Korla and warmer than Turpan. It is a slow-paced city where you want to stay for a while after arriving; it is a city with strong Western Regions characteristics, full of singing and dancing; it is also an ancient city with a hundred-year history. Delicious food is available throughout the city’s streets and alleys. There are plateau snow-capped mountains, glaciers, and lakes, as well as the unique folk customs of ethnic minorities.
[Tourist Attractions Recommendation]
1. Kashgar Ancient City, five-star recommendation
The ancient city is a must-visit place when coming to Kashgar, as its history supports the entire popularity of Kashgar, dating back at least a hundred years. Kashgar Ancient City is located in the city center, with nearly a hundred streets and alleys and various bazaars, such as Hat Bazaar, Iron Bazaar, Dried Fruit Bazaar, Pigeon Bazaar, and so on. When you walk through the ancient city, you will feel that it is antique and full of exotic characteristics. Many people feel like they have entered a maze when they arrive at the ancient city because there are too many alleys to count. I remember that a high-quality movie ‘The Kite Runner’ was filmed in the old town.
2. Century-old Teahouse, five-star recommendation
The century-old teahouse is the only place I have visited three times during my trip to Kashgar. It is a place worth visiting again and again. Because the history of the teahouse is as long as that of the ancient city, just like what the regular tea drinkers say, the stories here are the stories of Kashgar. Here, you can taste the unchanged tea flavor for a hundred years, enjoy the happiness of singing and dancing, and taste the flavor of Xinjiang. It has now become a popular place for online celebrities to check in, and the uncle who dances, sings, and plays musical instruments has also become an online celebrity uncle.
3. Cattle and Sheep Bazaar, five stars
Kashgar’s cattle and sheep bazaar is world-famous, attracting many foreigners. It is located in Huangdi Township beside National Highway 314 in the suburbs and is a large live animal trading market in Xinjiang. It only opens on Sundays, and the scene is very spectacular! When you come here, you will find camels, yaks, cows, sheep, donkeys, horses, and so many more. It is a very interesting market. They use special marks and estimation methods to conduct transactions. It is worth visiting!
4. Pamir Plateau, five stars
The Pamir Plateau is a must-visit when in Kashi. It has National Highway 314, also known as the Karakoram Highway and the China-Pakistan Friendship Road, which is the world’s highest and most beautiful cycling highway. The Pamir Plateau was also called Congling and Buzhou Mountain by ancients and is a mysterious and sacred place. It has plateaus, glaciers, lakes, wetland parks, and world-famous snow-capped mountains such as Mount Muztagh Ata and K2 (Mount Qogir).
5. Tashkurgan County, five stars
Tashkurgan County, abbreviated as Ta County, is a border county in western China. It is not large in area but highly distinctive. It is inhabited by the Europoid Tajiks of China, who are warm and hospitable, welcoming guests from afar with eagle dances and songs. There is the historic Stone City here, as well as the Golden Grass Beach at the foot of Mount Kunlun. There are also Tajik weddings and horse-riding sheep-snatching events full of ethnic characteristics.
6. Hongqilapu Frontier Gate, five stars
Hongqilapu Frontier Gate borders Pakistan at an altitude of 4733 meters, with magnificent scenery. However, due to its harsh environment, it is known as the Valley of Death. The Tajiks who live here are also known as the People of Heaven. Hongqilapu is China’s highest-altitude port and also a terminal point of the journey to the Pamir Plateau. Standing under the Frontier Gate, one feels a sense of pride. It is a must-see attraction when visiting Tashkurgan County.
8. Xiangfei Tomb, four stars
The Xiangfei Tomb is an ancient century-old tomb. Viewed from afar, it is resplendent and dazzling. It also has a beautiful legend. A woman named Yipaerhan, also a beloved concubine of Emperor Qianlong, was called Xiangfei because she naturally carried the fragrance of wild olive flowers. It is said that she was buried here after her death. There is a certain correlation between her and Xiang from the TV series ‘My Fair Princess’.
9. Kashi Grand Bazaar, four stars
Kashi Grand Bazaar, also known as the Central and West Asia International Trade Market or the East Gate Grand Bazaar, has more than 20 specialized sub-markets inside, such as dried fruits, clothing, jade and pearls, etc. It is a large international trade market in the northwest of China. It’s a great place for strolling, shopping, and buying gifts. There are many types of goods with affordable prices, which makes it worth visiting. Foreigners like to call it the ‘Sunday Market’, but in fact, it is open every day.
10. Gaotai Residential Area, four stars
Gaotai Residential Area is an ancient residential building complex in Kashi. If it weren’t being upgraded and transformed now, it should be five stars. Gaotai Residential Area is one of the landmarks of Kashi City. When I visited, due to the demolition and reconstruction for renovation, I couldn’t go in to take a look, which was a bit of a pity. I could only take photos from the periphery as a keepsake. To my understanding, it has a history of nearly 600 years and is a historic district with ancient Western Regions characteristics and pottery art. Its architecture and composition are both of great historical significance and ornamental value.
