If one says,
There are two places in China that one must visit.
One is Tibet, and the other is Xinjiang.
If Tibet, the holy land, gives people a soul-stirring experience,
Then Xinjiang offers more visual impact and enjoyment.
Precautions
1. Pay attention to keeping warm. The temperature difference between morning and evening is large. In the urban area, it can reach thirty to forty degrees Celsius, but due to the higher latitude of some attractions, the temperature can also drop to below zero.
2. This is the north, and it is extremely dry. Be sure to moisturize. The ultraviolet rays are particularly strong! Sunscreen is a must. I applied sunscreen every day and still got two shades darker after a week!
Bole in March
Sayram Lake is really beautiful. I arrived in Bole City, Xinjiang, at the end of March. At this time, the ice on the lake had not yet melted, and the cracked ice surface was still mint green. Although I didn’t see the most beautiful Sayram Lake, such a beautiful place is worth visiting anytime.
The best travel season in Xinjiang is from May to October. The temperature is pleasant during this time (some attractions are closed in winter due to snow). In May, you can go to Yili to see the lavender fields; in June, you can experience the perfect fusion of snow-capped mountains and flower fields at Sayram Lake; in July and August, you can admire the vast and lush grasslands; and in September and October, the autumn scenery of Kanas is even more breathtaking. However, note that the temperature difference between morning and evening in Xinjiang is large, truly living up to the saying "Wear cotton-padded clothes in the morning and gauze in the afternoon, eating watermelon by the fire".
Xinjiang is vast, and most of its magnificent scenery is far apart. In remote areas, you can rent a car for self-driving tours. Nowadays, most well-known tourist attractions have direct flights. If your budget allows, you can choose to fly; taking a bus is a waste of time.
Apricot blossoms in Yili in April
One cannot fully appreciate the vastness of China without visiting Xinjiang, nor the beauty of Xinjiang without visiting Yili. In the countryside, along rural roads, one can often see apricot blossoms. "Apricot blossoms闹 spring on the branches", and in the spring when everything comes back to life, this touch of spring is even more intense. However, how can these lonely apricot blossoms compare to those in Tulgen?
Guozigou in June
Guozigou is known as the "First Scenery of Yili", and ancients have praised it in poems as "Its scenery rivals that of Guilin, and its cliff stones are even more strange than those of Yanyan". When traveling by car from Urumqi to Yining, Guozigou is a must-pass route, with National Highway 312 winding and extending through the valley. In spring and summer, it is the most beautiful valley in western Xinjiang.
June’s Sayram Lake Golden Lotus
Sayram Lake, known as the ‘Last Drop of Tears from the Atlantic,’ is the last place favored by the warm and wet air currents from the Atlantic Ocean. The snow-capped mountains along the lake are reflected in the blue waters, and Sayram Lake under the lens resembles the scenery near the Alps.
Winter’s Sayram Lake ice holes
June’s Kalajun Purple Primrose Flower Sea
The Kalajun Grassland is known as the ‘Five-Colored Flower Sea’. In June, the ice and snow above the grassland have not yet melted, but the vast grassland is already full of vitality, with white, yellow, and other colored wildflowers blooming. Among them, the most fantastical and unique are the purple primrose flowers. Round ball-shaped flowers cover the grassland, and the purple flower sea under the snow-capped mountains is probably a unique sight only found in Kalajun.
June’s Duku Highway
There is a place where the scenery is on the road, and there is a type of travel called a road trip. If you are still longing for National Highway 318 and hope to encounter the most beautiful scenery on the Sichuan-Tibet Highway, however, there is a heavenly road in Xinjiang that is even more beautiful and spectacular, more dangerous and unique, and that is the Duku Highway! The Xinjiang Duku Highway!
One road takes you through deserts, mountains, neighboring regions, and snowfields, switching back and forth. This highway is a true ‘heavenly road’ running through the vast Tianshan Mountains.
July’s Zhaosu
In midsummer July, the vast rapeseed fields bloom under the foot of Tianshan Mountain in Zhaosu Grassland, Xinjiang, with blue skies, white clouds, snow-capped mountains, and yellow flowers, creating a breathtaking beauty.
Zhaosu is Xinjiang’s largest rapeseed oil production area, with a planting area of one million mu, and is known as the ‘Hometown of Rapeseed Oil in China’. Every July is the rape blossom season, with endless yellow flowers like a golden ocean sweeping across the vast grassland, echoing the Tianshan Mountains in the distance, creating a magnificent western scenery. Stepping into such a sea of rapeseed flowers is like entering a vast dream—the majestic snow-capped peaks of the Tianshan Mountains are faintly visible, the sky is deep blue and transparent, and the path ahead has disappeared into the golden sea of flowers; vehicles are like boats ‘floating’ in the waves of flowers; on the endless horizon, rapeseed flowers and shelterbelts depict a picturesque idyllic scenery. The ‘painted scenery’ under the sunshine is like a dream.
September’s Bayanbulak Grassland
September’s Nine-Bend-Eighteen-Turn River
September’s Northern Xinjiang
October’s Tashkurgan
October’s Luntai Poplar Forest
November’s Kanas Moon Bay
November’s Hemu Village
December ski resort
Many of Xinjiang’s must-visit attractions are scattered across the region. Besides the relatively expensive transportation costs to and from Xinjiang, you need to budget for visiting these attractions, such as: Flaming Mountain, Kanas, Nalati, Korla, Tianshan Mountain, Sayram Lake.
