Tianshan Tianchi
Tianshan Tianchi – The Pearl of Mount Tianshan. The entire lake is crystal-clear, surrounded by mountains. The lake reflects the Bogda Peak in the distance, and there are verdant spruces by the shore. The scenery is like a fairyland, like a sapphire surrounded by mountains.
Tianshan Tianchi is the closest famous scenic spot to Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang. If you only have 1-2 days in Urumqi, I suggest you leave one day to visit Tianshan Tianchi, known as the "Jade Pool".
Compared to the Tianchi Lake in Changbai Mountain, Tianshan Tianchi in Urumqi is a natural alpine lake with a crescent-shaped lake surface, which is equally magnificent and captivates countless travelers. Its lake water is glistening, surrounded by snowy mountains, and set off by verdant and tall spruce and pine trees. It looks like a sapphire falling from the sky. Coupled with the snowy glaciers on the peaks in the distance, contrasting with the blue sky and clear water, you will feel like being in a fairyland, drifting and emotionally soaring!
Walking in the beautiful scenery of Tianshan Tianchi, every step you take reveals a new view, allowing you to wander among the numerous scenic spots such as Stone Gate with a Thin Line, Sea God’s Needle, Dragon Pond with Green Moon, South Gate Viewing Snow, Colorful Bay, Rock Paintings, and forget everything else!
Suggested itinerary: The scenic area of Tianshan Tianchi has very clear signs for tourists. The itinerary generally consists of two parts. One is to walk slowly along the plank path by the Tianchi Lake of Mount Tianshan. By climbing up the stairs along the way, you can see the scenery of the entire main lake of Tianchi! The other is to take a walk down along the waterfall. You can also take a boat into the Tianchi Lake to experience the pleasantness of watching the scenery. The whole tour takes about 4-5 hours.

Transportation: If you want to visit Mount Tianshan and Tianchi Lake from Urumqi, you can take a regular bus. Below, I will briefly explain the bus route. Each time period may change slightly, so be sure to ask around when you go.
Outbound trip: In the morning, take a bus from the Urumqi Suburban Passenger Transport Station to Fukang Passenger Transport Station. Tickets are available from 08:00-20:00, with buses departing every 10 minutes or so, priced at 15 yuan, and taking about 2 hours. Then take a scenic area bus or taxi from Fukang Passenger Transport Station to the Tianchi Tourist Center, with scenic area bus tickets priced at 5 yuan.
Return trip: Take the shuttle bus back to the Tianchi Tourist Center, then take a coach or taxi to Fukang Passenger Transport Station, and then take a bus to Urumqi, with an overall journey time of about 3.5 hours.
Yili
Yili—beauty in its vastness. There is a saying that circulates today: "If you haven’t been to Xinjiang, you don’t know how vast China is; if you haven’t been to Yili, you don’t know how beautiful Xinjiang is." The scenery of Yili is distinct in every season and will surely captivate your heart!
Taking this route will encompass very famous grasslands such as Gongnais, Nalati, Tangbula, Zhaosu, Karajun, and others. It is also the most classic way to explore Yili, where you can experience the culture and hospitality of the most primitive grassland herdsmen.
Along the way, you will pass through the picturesque self-driving route of Guozigou. Ascending any slope of Guozigou, you will be greeted by endless views of forest belts and mountain ridges. When passing by Sayram Lake, you can see the entire lake sparkling with a deep blue color, with a vast grassland stretching alongside it, backed by snow-capped mountains. When you find yourself here, it’s as if you have stepped into a world of high-purity primary colors.

Duku Highway
Duku Highway—there is a place where the scenery is on the road, and a type of travel called highway travel. If you are still yearning for National Highway 318, hoping to encounter the most beautiful scenery on the Sichuan-Tibet Highway, however, there is a sky road in Xinjiang that is even more beautiful and spectacular, more dangerous and unique, and that is the Duku Highway! Xinjiang Duku Highway!
One road takes you through deserts, mountains, next to dunes, and across snowy plains, switching back and forth. This highway is a true "sky road" that spans the vast Tianshan Mountains.
The Duku Highway winds like a huge dragon across the Tianshan Mountains. At the southern end of the Duku Highway, visitors will also enjoy the magnificent landscape of the Keziliya Mountain Area, where the red rock forest is breathtakingly spectacular. Moreover, the nearby Tianshan Mysterious Grand Canyon Scenic Area also amazes tourists with its deep and winding paths. And within the canyon, the Buddhist Grottoes of "A’ai," carved in the Tang Dynasty, have been discovered, complete with exquisite murals, making this area a prestigious location for location shooting. The Kuqa River runs alongside the highway, and after passing through the "Flame Zone" at the southern foot of the Tianshan Mountains, the highway is replaced by steep cliffs, green grass, thorny bushes covered with passionately blooming yellow flowers, and scattered pine trees. The valleys are filled with the aroma of wildflowers, while towering peaks are capped with chilling snow.

Urumqi
Urumqi – Urumqi is the capital of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, located at the northern foot of the Tianshan Mountains. The Mongolian term “Urumqi” means “beautiful pasture”. It is the city farthest from the ocean on Earth and also the geographic center of Asia.
Urumqi is surrounded by mountains on three sides, with a flat and open plain to the north, and peaks such as Bogda Mountain and Dongshan Mountain to the east. To the west and south are Xishan Mountain and Tiangeer Mountain, respectively. The Geographic Center of Asian Landmass is located 30km south of the city. This land is inhabited by 43 ethnic groups, including Han, Uyghur, Kazakh, Hui, and others. The numerous ethnic groups and different customs constitute the unique charm of today’s Urumqi and Changji.
Urumqi is a fiery city. The people here are very straightforward, especially when it comes to drinking alcohol. You must be honest and straightforward without any pretense, so when you are a guest in Xinjiang, you must have a good tolerance for alcohol. You will fully appreciate this when you arrive in Urumqi.

The hottest month is July, with an average temperature of 25.7°C; the coldest month is January, with an average temperature of -15.2°C. The best time to visit Xinjiang is in August and September of autumn, when the weather begins to cool down and the fruits are ripe. Especially in early September, this is when photography enthusiasts in Urumqi come out in droves. It is suitable for conventional travel from May to October, and from December to February of the next year, there are winter tourism projects in places like Tianchi Lake and Nanshan West Poplar Grove.
August is the beginning of autumn, when the Tianchi Lake is blessed with refreshing breezes and pleasant coolness, making it a treasure trove for escaping the summer heat. The hospitable Kazakhs have set up white yurts on the grassy lawns by Tianchi Lake, preparing milk tea, kumiss, cheese, and mutton eaten with hands for tourists, as well as delightful folk dances and songs.

The hottest month is July, with an average temperature of 25.7°C; the coldest month is January, with an average temperature of -15.2°C. The diurnal temperature variation here is large, so it is important to take precautions against the cold. In May, June, September, and October, you should bring sweaters, jackets, or trench coats. If you visit before April or after November, you must wear thick wool coats or down jackets for warmth.
