Nanshan is located in the vast mountainous areas in the south of Urumqi, Xinjiang, at the northern foothills of the Karawu Range of the Northern Tianshan Mountains. Nanshan Pasture is 75 kilometers away from the urban area, located in the transitional zone between middle and low mountains, with an altitude of 2,252 meters. Nanshan Pasture is a natural scenic area covering an area of 119 square kilometers, with ten major and minor valleys running east to west. It is a mountain and forest-grassland structural type. It is both an excellent natural pasture and a natural scenic area for summer vacation, recuperation, and sightseeing. During the Qing Dynasty, it had become a famous pastoral area. Ji Xiaolan once wrote in a poem, ‘The pasture grass is lush and green, nurturing a hundred thousand horses.’ In 1990, the Xinjiang People’s Government announced this place as one of the first autonomous region-level scenic areas. Famous attractions include East and West Baiyanggou, Gangou Chrysanthemum Terrace, Shuixigou Zhaobi Mountain, Miaoergou, and other places.
