Beijing is one of the first batch of national historical and cultural cities and a city with a large number of World Heritage Sites. More than three thousand years of history have given birth to numerous places of interest such as the Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, Badaling Great Wall, and Summer Palace. As early as 700,000 years ago, primitive human tribes known as "Peking Man" appeared in the Zhoukoudian area of Beijing. In 1045 BC, Beijing became the capital of feudal states such as Ji and Yan. Since 938 AD, Beijing has successively been the secondary capital of Liao, the middle capital of Jin, the great capital of Yuan, and the capitals of Ming and Qing dynasties. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Beijing became one of the "Four Great Gatherings Under Heaven". During the Republic of China period, it was the capital of the Northern Warlords’ government. On October 1, 1949, it became the capital of the People’s Republic of China.
