Hainan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture (abbreviated as Hainan Prefecture) is located in the east of Qinghai Province, bordering the Haidong region and Huangnan Prefecture to the east, Haixi Prefecture to the west, Guoluo Prefecture to the south, and separated from Haibei Prefecture by Qinghai Lake to the north. It is named Hainan because it is located in the south of the famous Qinghai Lake. Human activities in the Hainan region date back 7,000 years. The land area of Hainan Prefecture is 41,250 square kilometers, with the lowest elevation at 2,160 meters and the highest at 5,305 meters. It is divided into three major land types: mountainous regions, high plateaus and beaches, and river and lake valleys. Mountainous regions account for 53.3% of the total land area. High plateaus and beaches account for 34.3% of the total land area, and this type of land has good natural conditions and is the current and future development area for agriculture and animal husbandry. River and lake valleys account for 12.4% of the total land area. This type of land is low-lying with good heat, water source, and soil conditions, making it the main agricultural production area.
Hainan Prefecture is one of the important livestock farming bases in Qinghai Province. The prefecture has 3.5333 million hectares (equivalent to 52.5678 million mu) of natural grassland, of which 49.4773 million mu are usable, accounting for 94.1% of the total grassland area, with an average of 13.31 mu per livestock unit; the winter and spring grassland area is 27.1427 million mu, accounting for 54.86% of the usable grassland area. The grassland has a flat terrain, abundant sunshine, and rainy and hot seasons coinciding. It has cool climates and lush water and grass in summer and autumn, as well as warm winter and spring pastures. It possesses unique natural conditions for the development of animal husbandry.
