Kanas is a Mongolian term meaning ‘beautiful and fertile, mysterious and unpredictable’. It is located in the deep mountains and dense forests of Burqin County, Altay Prefecture, Xinjiang.
Kanas Lake fascinates people with its mysterious lake monster, changing-color lake water, and dazzling natural scenery. The lake water often changes color with the seasons and weather, creating a dreamy and enchanting landscape.
The surroundings of Kanas Lake are mixed with primitive forests of spruce, fir, and Siberian larch. The sunny slopes are covered with dense grass. Different plant communities are well-defined. Every autumn, various colorful forests compete for brilliance, presenting a splendid display. The ever-changing clouds above the forest and the winding Kanas River constitute the most dreamlike autumn scenery in Xinjiang.
Below are the autumn scenery of the three core areas in Kanas Scenic Area, Xinjiang
I. Kanas Lake + Kanas River (Three Bays)
Kanas Lake is an inland freshwater lake in the Kanas Scenic Area. The lake water comes from the melting water of glaciers on surrounding snow-capped mountains and local precipitation. With an altitude of 1,374 meters and an area of 45 square kilometers, it is a high-mountain lake formed by Quaternary glaciation and is one of the deep lakes in China. The shape of Kanas Lake resembles a crescent moon, surrounded by lush coniferous and broad-leaved mixed forests, which are connected to the vast mountainous grassland. It has been rated as the most beautiful lake in China by Chinese National Geography magazine.
Shenxian Bay, Moon Bay, and Wolong Bay are collectively known as the ‘Three Bays’. They are iconic attractions of Kanas and one of the must-visit places when coming to Kanas. The first is Shenxian Bay, a shallow beach formed by Kanas Lake in a low and gentle mountain stream. Under sunlight, the lake surface shines with fine light, as if countless pearls are scattered freely. Therefore, it is also called ‘Pearl Beach’. Coupled with the often misty surroundings, the mountain scenery, lake water, and trees complement each other, creating an otherworldly atmosphere, hence the name Shenxian Bay.
In the golden autumn, Shenxian Bay is as flat as a mirror, with forests lining the riverbank painted in layers of colors. The golden reflection on the clear water surface constitutes a fascinating and dreamlike autumn scenery.
II. The Gods’ Private Reserve – Hemu Village
III. Autumn Scenery in Baihaba Village, Xinjiang
In the beautiful Kanas Scenic Area of Xinjiang, there is also a peaceful and quaint primitive village – Baihaba Village
