In Kanas, there are at least four things you can do
1. Viewing the Lake: The scenery of Kanas Lake is relatively concentrated, mainly in two places, one being the lake area. Most tourists will visit the Fish Viewing Pavilion, a major attraction of Kanas. Take a speedboat to the other side of the lake. The Fish Viewing Pavilion is built on a steep cliff and is the best place to overlook Kanas Lake. If you don’t want to climb the 3,000 steps, you can take a walk by the lake as the sky darkens. The path from your accommodation to the lake area runs along the water, with well-maintained plank roads, tall trees, and the melodious singing of birds.
2. Walking the “Three Bays”: Wolong Bay, Shenxian Bay, and Moon Bay have the highest appearance rates in photos. Most people view and photograph them from a distance on the highway. But if you have enough time and interest, be sure to walk along the azure water and get close to those charming colors.
You can start from Wolong Bay, make your way down to the waterside where the scenery is completely different. Follow the grassland, jump over pebbles, and walk all the way to Moon Bay, then climb up the mountain to the highway. Taking aerial shots of the “Three Bays” from the best locations above the highway is an exciting experience that will consume a lot of film. Then, take your time walking back. If you get tired, you can take the eco-friendly bus, the fare of which is already included in the ticket price. You can ride as many times as you want at designated stops.
3. Drinking Tea and Soaking in the Sun: The sun in Kanas in September is charming and warm. Wearing a sweater and a large Russian-style shawl, holding a book under the setting sun, you may find that the real intention is not in the book. Alternatively, put on headphones and play a NICK CAVE CD, or listen to the female host chat with you in her stiff Chinese, or just stare at the sky and listen to the birds singing. At that moment, you will understand what it means to relax without doing anything and what it means to feel peaceful with your mind soaring in the sky.
4. Horseback Riding: It is recommended to arrange this activity during the golden traverse from Kanas to Hemu! Unless you have never ridden a horse before or your skills are too poor, you can use your free time in Kanas to practice, preparing you for the long journey to Hemu.
Best Photography Time in Kanas
1. The spring, summer, and autumn scenery of Kanas each have their own unique charm. However, autumn is still considered the best. The blue-green of the sky and lake, the bright yellow of the birch forest and yellow pine trees, and the点缀 of rich colors like red, brown, and white make it a natural oil painting.
2. The autumn in Hemu comes earlier than in Kanas. When I arrived in Hemu on September 27th last year, the birch leaves had already fallen by half. However, seeing the golden yellow leaves all over the ground and the bleak autumn wind created another kind of beauty.
3. The best time should be at the end of September, roughly from September 15th to October 1st. However, due to climate variations, the time for the leaves to change varies each year. It is best to check the current situation online before departing.
4. During the National Day holiday, there are too many photography groups in Hemu, and photographers wearing vests are everywhere darting around the village. So if your schedule is flexible, it is best not to go during the National Day holiday when fees will double and the crowds will affect the photography experience. If you can only go at this time, it is best not to shoot in crowds.
