Keketuohai Town/Fuyun County
Gather at a designated location in the morning and take a bus to Koktokay. Along National Highway 216, we will pass by Huoshao Mountain, Colorful Bay, Karamay Hooved Animal Reserve, and Gurbantunggut Desert. With some luck, you may catch a glimpse of wild asses, Mongolian gazelles, Przewalski’s horses at the breeding base, etc. After lunch, we will proceed to Koktokay Town. On the way, we will visit the scenic Koko苏里 (Wild Duck Lake) known as a water town at a cost of 30 yuan per person. We will also take a distant view of Yileimu Lake. Upon arrival in Koktokay Town, which was once the cradle of China’s non-ferrous metals industry and the hometown of gemstones, you may optionally visit the Koktokay National Mining Park (entrance fee and transportation fee of 150 yuan per person at your own expense). Here, you can visit the pride of the Koktokay and Xinjiang people, the meritorious site of the Chinese people—the No. 3 Mine Pit (30 minutes). The tantalum, niobium, beryllium, and other metal and nonmetallic minerals unearthed here have made outstanding contributions to the country’s aerospace industry, repayment of foreign debt, and breaking the nuclear monopoly. Continue with a visit to the Ayigesi Mine Tunnel (30 minutes), which is 800 meters long. Inside the tunnel, you can see over 80 different ore bodies produced by the No. 3 Vein up close, including gemstones such as beryl, spodumene, quartz, and mica nests. Afterwards, visit the Koktokay Exhibition Hall to experience advanced 360-degree holographic projection and virtual imaging technology. Overnight stay in Koktokay Town.

After breakfast, take a bus to Keketuohai National Geopark, a national AAAAA scenic area, and transfer to a shuttle bus to enter the scenic area. Keketuohai in Mongolian means ‘blue river bend’. The newly formed Irtysh River (the only river in China flowing into the Arctic Ocean) happens to flow through the town. The Irtysh scenic river section within the scenic area has steep mountains and strangely shaped boulders and rock masses, forming lifelike animal and human shapes; the shady slope is densely covered with pine forests, while the sunny slope is interspersed with birch forests among the strange peaks and rocks. The bottom of the gully is lush with flowers and grasses, with multiple hot springs distributed among them, flowing day and night. The water contains various minerals and has certain therapeutic effects on many diseases. Take the shuttle bus to tour the Irtysh Grand Canyon scenic area, which features large metamorphic granite geology and landforms and峡谷 natural scenery. Along the way, enjoy the views of the birch forest, Rich Turtle Welcoming Guests, Hundred Herbs Garden, Triangle (asterisk might be a typo and should be ignored or replaced with the correct name if available), Stone Gate, and other attractions. Visit the landmark attraction of the Altay Mountains, the God’s Bell Mountain. You may be lucky enough to pick up Erqis River strange rocks along the Irtysh River. After dinner, return to the hotel to check in.
Day 3: Keketuohai Town/Fuyun – Urumqi

After breakfast, take a bus back to Urumqi from Fuyun County. Fuyun County got its name from ‘Tian Fu Yun Cang’ (abundant natural resources), and is known as the ‘Natural Mineral Museum’. Fuyun County contains up to 92 types of minerals, accounting for more than half of the 171 types of minerals in China, covering almost all mineral species in the Altay region. There are as many as 10 minerals whose reserves rank among the top ten in the country. It is also an important producer of national rare metal and non-metal minerals. The colorful gemstones have earned Fuyun the reputation of ‘Hometown of Gemstones’. The tour will make a stop at Qianli Juanhua Gemstone Mall to visit the large Aquamarine Exhibition Hall (40 minutes). The unique shapes, colors, textures, and patterns of the Erqis River strange rocks and various gemstones we see at Qianli Juanhua (Fuyun Gemstone City) are like the legends they contain, recording the vicissitudes of the sea and geological changes. After lunch, passing by the Ancient Sea Hot Spring, you can take a self-paid hot spring bath, and then return to Urumqi to end the Keketuohai tour!
