When it comes to the large province of Xinjiang, many things may come to mind, such as the beautiful Tianshan Mountains, galloping horses on the grassland, Hami melons, raisins, and kebabs, and other delicacies.
People living in Xinjiang or tourists who have been to Xinjiang must also know that the scenery of southern and northern Xinjiang is completely different.
With the Tianshan Mountains in central Xinjiang as the boundary, the region is divided into southern Xinjiang and northern Xinjiang, forming two distinct styles. So why is there such a big difference between southern and northern Xinjiang in the Xinjiang region?
Division between northern and southern Xinjiang
Xinjiang’s scenery is diverse, encompassing almost all domestic landscape types such as grasslands, wetlands, snow-capped mountains, deserts, plateaus, forests, lakes, and more. The scenery of southern and northern Xinjiang is vastly different.
Generally speaking, Xinjiang is divided by the Tianshan Mountains. The area south of the mountains is called southern Xinjiang, and the area north of the mountains is called northern Xinjiang. The Duku Highway (formerly the Wusun Ancient Road) connects southern and northern Xinjiang, while Hami and Turpan are referred to as eastern Xinjiang.
