1. Ili is the hometown of Celestial Horses. According to historical records, during the reign of Emperor Wu of Han, foreigners presented Wusun horses to the emperor. Seeing their majestic appearance, Emperor Wu named them "Celestial Horses"; later, someone else presented Khan-blood horses from Dawan in the Western Regions (said to sweat blood-colored sweat), so he renamed the Wusun horses "Western Extreme Horses" and called the Khan-blood horses "Celestial Horses". The "Celestial Horses" and "Western Extreme Horses" mentioned here are ancestors of the Kazak horses of Ili. Ili horses have handsome appearances, sturdy builds, and strong resistance to disease, making them one of the fine horse breeds cultivated in China.
