D5. Beitun – Urumqi
How to choose among the three travel options
There are three ways to travel to Altay in winter:
Fly directly to Kanas Airport
You can fly directly from Urumqi to Kanas. The price in winter is basically around 300 yuan, with a slight increase around the Spring Festival. The number of flights per day varies, so it’s recommended to make a travel plan and time schedule in advance. Due to unstable winter weather, flights may be canceled in case of severe weather. If you have limited time and a low tolerance for errors, it’s recommended to take the train or bus to reduce the impact of force majeure.
Take the train from Urumqi to Beitun
If you’re going to Kanas and Hemu, consider taking the train to Beitun.
Then rent/hire a car in Beitun in advance, so you can directly pick it up and head to Kanas after getting off the train. You can enjoy a Russian-style breakfast in Burqin in the morning.
In winter, there are only two trains from Urumqi to Beitun, departing at 8 pm and 11 pm respectively. The price for a hard sleeper starts at 163 yuan, with slight differences for upper, middle, and lower berths. You can stroll around Urumqi during the day and fall asleep to the rhythmic sound of the train wheels at night…
Why choose to visit Xinjiang in winter? What’s different about traveling to Kanas in winter?
Worth watching
Compared to the blooming flowers of spring, the lush green grass of summer, and the colorful forests of autumn, winter in Xinjiang is extremely cold and long. However, in this season that makes you grit your teeth with cold, there lies a pure and stunning beauty that cannot be seen anywhere else at any other time.

In the morning light, Hemu Village is a fairyland filled with morning mist. Sunlight spills around the courtyards of Hemu, and the snow-covered ground shines brightly, bringing vitality to the entire village. In winter, Hemu is dressed in silver and white, presenting a beautiful and elegant scenery.
Here, you can experience the true northern scenery, with thousands of miles of ice-covered land and snowflakes floating in the air.
Low Consumption
Compared to the high prices of airfare, train tickets, scenic area tickets, shuttle bus tickets, and accommodation in summer and autumn, Xinjiang’s winter is much kinder to your wallet…
Major Transportation: In winter, airfare and train ticket costs to Xinjiang are very cheap. Direct one-way flights from popular cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen range from 300-1000 yuan; one-way train tickets also range from 500-800 yuan. Airfare is cheaper than long-distance train tickets;
Scenic Area Tickets: Everyone knows that the biggest expense of traveling to Xinjiang is the scenic area tickets and shuttle bus fees. Compared to other tourist cities, it is a shameful number. But in winter in Xinjiang, due to limitations, the ticket prices for scenic areas are reduced, and shuttle buses can be replaced by our own cars. Especially in northern Xinjiang, in summer and autumn, the combined ticket price for the three scenic areas of Kanas, Hemu, and Baihaba is 340 yuan/person, while in winter, a one-ticket system is implemented for the three scenic areas of Kanas, Hemu, and Baihaba, with a ticket price of 90 yuan/person;
Accommodation Costs: In summer and autumn, popular places like Kanas, Hemu, Baihaba, and Burqin cost about 300 yuan per person per night for accommodation, while in winter, accommodation only costs about 130 yuan per person.
