Xinjiang’s Climate and Best Travel Seasons
Xinjiang is located deep in the interior of Asia, surrounded by high mountains that block moisture from the ocean, resulting in a typical temperate continental arid climate. The main characteristics are cold winters and hot summers, with long winters and short summers. After several waves of cold fronts bringing significant temperature drops in winter, the entire northern Xinjiang turns into a vast snowy landscape. The Ili River Valley and Fuyun County in Altay have records of snowfall exceeding one meter in depth. Records of the lowest temperatures ranging from -40 to -50 degrees Celsius also exist. Vehicles must use anti-skid chains on many road segments. During this time, apart from visiting southern Xinjiang or skiing in the scenic spots of northern Xinjiang, many places are inaccessible. Therefore, from the end of October each year, Xinjiang enters a long off-season for tourism, which lasts until after May of the following year.
As the region with the least precipitation in the country, the climate in Xinjiang is ‘extremely dry’, which naturally becomes the most prominent feeling. Summers are often clear skies with bright sunshine. The solar radiation is only slightly weaker than that of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Around mid-June, the daylight lasts for more than 14 hours, which is why it has become famous for its melons, fruits, and cotton.
Overall, the tourist season in Xinjiang is from May to October each year, with the best travel season being July, August, and September.
Transportation in Xinjiang
Transportation is naturally the first factor travelers consider. Contrary to your imagination, Xinjiang has a relatively developed network of roads, railways, and aviation. Moreover, currently, with the opportunity of the Western Development Program, the construction of transportation roads in Xinjiang is undergoing rapid changes.

However, the main cost will still be transportation. We will not consider the cost of entering and leaving Xinjiang for now. In Xinjiang, you can rent a car, join a tour group, or mainly take buses if you have time.
Itinerary Planning
Northern Xinjiang is characterized by lake scenery, grasslands and forests, natural wonders, and border tourism. Southern Xinjiang is characterized by folklore, customs, desert landscapes, cultural relics, and alpine exploration. Eastern Xinjiang is unique for its natural landscapes and cultural relics in Turpan and Hami.
Many travelers say it’s difficult to determine what kind of itinerary is reasonable. To travel to Xinjiang, you should first have some understanding of the main scenic areas and differences. Within the budgeted time, using as little money as possible to visit as many scenic spots as possible and gain as many different experiences as possible should be the principle of our travel.
