Nanshan is located in the vast mountainous area in the south of Urumqi, Xinjiang, at the northern foothills of the Karawucheng Mountains of the Northern Tianshan Mountains. Nanshan Pasture is 75 kilometers away from the urban area, located in the transition zone between middle and low mountains, with an altitude of 2,252 meters. Nanshan Pasture is a natural scenic area covering an area of 119 square kilometers, with ten major and minor valleys running east-west. It is a mountainous and forest-grassland structured scenic area. It is both an excellent natural pasture and a natural scenic area for summer, recuperation, and tourism. It became a famous pastoral area in the Qing Dynasty. Ji Xiaolan once wrote: ‘The meadow is green and lush, nourishing hundreds of thousands of horses.’ In 1990, the Xinjiang People’s Government announced it as the first batch of autonomous regional scenic spots.
