The large-scale live-action mythical musical "Kunlun’s Promise" has premiered, kicking off in Urumqi, Xinjiang. This is the latest work meticulously crafted by Landscape Ceremony, with Mr. Mei Shuaiyuan, the founder of China’s live-action performances and chairman of Landscape Ceremony, serving as the lead director. The creative team boasts a formidable lineup. The live-action theater of "Kunlun’s Promise" is located in the valley east of the Silk Road Ski Resort in the Nanshan scenic area of Urumqi, integrating the beauty of natural landscapes, the radiance of artistic culture, and the novelty of modern technology. The grand live-action stage brings together the majestic and solemn Western Zhou Dynasty palace complex and the fairyland of the Western Regions within the same space, embodying realistic and expressive stage effects. The 8,000-square-meter audience area can accommodate over 3,000 spectators to watch the performance.
As one of the ten major livelihood projects of Urumqi City in 2018 and the 2019 cultural project for the benefit of the people, Kunlun’s Pact will be presented as a gift in celebration of the 70th anniversary of the founding of New China, resonating with the main theme of "maintaining national unity and promoting ethnic unity", and displaying the long history of exchanges, interactions, and integrations between the people of the mainland and the frontier.
Recently, the performance entered the final synthetic dress rehearsal stage. The chief director, Mr. Mei Shuaiyuan, has overall control over the final presentation of the work. His demanding and rigorous approach to artistic presentation is reflected in every requirement he makes. He believes that Kunlun’s Pact is a vital work that will take root and thrive in Xinjiang, displaying the romantic beauty of history and mythology among the landscapes.
Based on the records in classics such as The Classic of Mountains and Seas and The Travels of Emperor Mu, Kunlun’s Pact tells the story of Emperor Ji Man of the Western Zhou Dynasty fulfilling the pact with the West Queen Mother, the daughter of the Kunlun God and ancestor Huang Di. He vowed to exchange hearts and traveled thousands of miles to the Western Regions, enduring countless hardships, and finally fulfilled the Kunlun pact with the West Queen Mother, resonating with the harmonious sound of gold and jade, and winning the loyalty of the people throughout the country.
Mr. Mei Shuaiyuan said that Landscape Ceremony prefers themes with grand historical narratives, integrating the gorgeousness of dreams and dramatic conflicts of reality, the call of poetry and distant places, and the ultimate expression of patriotism into the natural live environment to form a content-oriented performance that awakens the long-sleeping Chinese stories on the ancient land.
The story of Emperor Mu of Zhou and the West Queen Mother’s millennial pact has been widely circulated in China. "The Jade Pool’s Mother opens her beautiful window, the song of yellow bamboo moves the earth with sorrow. The eight horses run thirty thousand li a day, why doesn’t Emperor Mu return again?" Tang Dynasty poet Li Shangyin’s seven-character quatrain "The Jade Pool" interprets the legend of the Kunlun pact between the West Queen Mother and Emperor Mu of Zhou.
"Kunlun’s Pact is a historical mythology drama with both historically true parts and mythical legendary parts. The mythical part of the story is full of poetic and romantic atmosphere. The historical part is well-grounded. Whether it is ancient bronze ware or historical records, we can find ancient authentic traces," said Mr. Mei Shuaiyuan.
According to the records in The Travels of Emperor Mu, Emperor Mu of Zhou was the fifth emperor of the Western Zhou Dynasty. He appointed Zao Fu as his charioteer. Zao Fu was skilled in driving chariots. He tamed eight magnificent horses—Chi Ji, Dao Li, Bai Yi, Yu Lun, Shan Zi, Qu Huang, Hua Liu, and Lv Er—in the Taolin, and used them as Emperor Mu’s royal chariot to travel westward on his inspection tour. Emperor Mu of Zhou departed from Hao Jing (today’s Xi’an, Shaanxi), crossed the Tian Shan Mountains, ascended Kunlun, and met the West Queen Mother of the West in the mythology.
History is like poetry, legends are like dreams. Thousands of years later, the Kunlun mythology is staged on the peak of the mountains. Kunlun’s Pact will unveil the dust-laden memories, recreate the mysterious ancient mythology on the land of the Western Regions, display the historical interconnectedness of cultures and blood ties among various parts of the country since ancient times, as well as the strong and enduring deep friendships among frontier people. It will resonate with the harmonious sound of gold and jade echoing through the millennia between heaven and earth.
