Travel Precautions:
1. Weather: As the saying goes, ‘Wear cotton in the morning, silk in the afternoon, and eat watermelon by the fire.’ The weather in Xinjiang is changeable, and you can experience all four seasons in one day, so please be sure to prepare sunscreen, cold protection, and rain gear;
2. Clothing: The diurnal temperature variation in Xinjiang is large, and even in July and August, it can be relatively cold at night, so clothing should be breathable and warm. Also, try to wear loose, cotton pants. If you want to go horseback riding, avoid wearing sandals without socks, as the stirrups will rub your feet raw in no time.
3. Sunscreen and Heatstroke Prevention: Some areas in Xinjiang have high altitudes and strong ultraviolet radiation, so please bring sunscreen items (such as high-SPF sunscreen, sunglasses), preferably long-sleeved shirts and pants, otherwise, you will definitely get sunburned after a day. Additionally, the highest temperature in the Turpan area in summer can reach over 40 degrees Celsius, so you should bring medication or powder for clearing heat and preventing heatstroke;
4. Transportation: The straight roads in Xinjiang can easily cause visual fatigue and speeding; roads in places like Tianshan Daban are very steep and the road conditions are poor, so drive carefully; moreover, most of Xinjiang is pastoral, and livestock such as cows and sheep often cross the roads, so if you hit livestock while driving, you will need to compensate and apologize. Friends on self-drive tours, please be very careful! Additionally, travel times on the road may be relatively long, so travelers who get carsick should take note.
5. Renting a Car: It’s best to have multiple people who can drive when renting a car because Xinjiang is vast, and it’s normal for scenic areas to be 500 to 600 kilometers apart. Driving alone can be very tiring. At the same time, due to the relatively few cars on Xinjiang’s highways, many people speed, so please pay attention to safety.
6. Shopping: In Xinjiang, items are sold by the kilogram. One kilogram equals two jin.
15. If you have the chance, I recommend going horseback riding. Yili horses are the best in Xinjiang, and the price for around 50 yuan (per hour) is negotiable. Remember, it’s best not to go to scenic areas for horseback riding because it’s too expensive.
