Day 1: Urumqi – Turpan
After breakfast, drive to ‘Hotland’ Turpan. Turpan City is located at the southern foot of Bogda Mountain in the eastern Tianshan Mountains, in the center of the Turpan Basin. Then head to the famous [Flaming Mountain] (visit time about 1 hour); ‘A mountain does not need to be high; it becomes famous if there are immortals on it.’ Flaming Mountain is such a famous mountain. The Flaming Mountain is barren and treeless; every midsummer, with the red sun overhead and the ground steaming, flames of clouds swirl around, resembling a flying fire dragon, very spectacular. Wu Cheng’en’s famous mythological novel Journey to the West is popular for telling the story of Tang Monk and his three disciples passing through this place and experiencing calamities on their way to the West.
