First Stop: Wucaiwan
Caiwan is located north of Jimusar County, Changji Prefecture, Xinjiang. Over thousands of years, due to crustal movements, the extremely thick coal seams have undergone many vicissitudes. The sandstone and mudstone covering the surface have been eroded by wind and rain, exposing the coal seams. They have burned out under the action of lightning and sunshine, forming a bizarre natural landscape.
Second Stop: Kanas Scenic Area
Kanas Lake, also known as Hanasi Lake, is a famous freshwater lake in the north of Burqin County, Altay Prefecture, Xinjiang, China. It is located in the Altay Mountains, with an area of 45.73 square kilometers, an average depth of 120 meters, and a maximum depth of 188.5 meters, with a water storage capacity of 5.38 billion cubic meters. It is crescent-shaped and is speculated to have been formed by the accumulation of water in a valley blocked by intense ancient glacial movement. Legends say that the lake monster ‘big red fish’ haunts Kanas Lake, allegedly reaching a length of 10 meters. Some scientists speculate that it is the large freshwater predatory fish, Hucho taimen, but this has not been supported by actual observations. The lake has beautiful scenery and lush surrounding forests. The main residents are the Tuvans. It is a national 5A-level tourist attraction in China.
Third Stop: Urho Fengcheng (Devil City)
Urho Fengcheng (also known as Devil City) is located in the Urho mining area of the Junggar Basin, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. It is a typical Yadan landform area, a national 4A-level scenic spot, and one of the ‘Magical Northwest 100 Scenic Spots’. Major attractions include Lover’s Valley, Snake Valley, and seven other distinctive canyons. The Mongolians call it ‘Sulum Hake’; the Uyghurs call it ‘Shayitankerxi’, meaning Devil City.
Fengcheng is 100 kilometers away from Karamay City, running northwest-east, with a length and width of more than 5 kilometers and an area of about 10 square kilometers. The ground elevation is about 350 meters. During the Cretaceous period, it was a huge freshwater lake. After two major crustal movements, the lake turned into a land of sandstone and mudstone, known geologically as a ‘gobi platform’.
Fourth Stop: Nalati Grassland
The Nalati Grassland, also known as the Gongnais Grassland, means ‘white sunny slope’ in Turkic. It is located in the east of Nalati Town, Xinyuan County, about 110.0 kilometers away from Xinyuan County, Ili Kazak Autonomous Prefecture. It is a mid-mountain grassland developed on the Tertiary paleopluvial deposits, located on the northern slope of the Nalati Mountains.
The Nalati Grassland is one of the four major grasslands in the world, a subalpine meadow plant area. It has been a famous pasture since ancient times. The beautiful grassland scenery combined with local Kazakh folklore has made it a famous tourist and resort area in Xinjiang.
The Nalati Scenic Area is a national AAAAA-level tourist attraction, one of Xinjiang’s top ten scenic spots, and a regional tourist scenic spot. It is an important scenic area and brand in Xinjiang, as well as by the Ili River.
Fifth Stop: Duku Highway
The Duku Highway, a highway from Dushanzi to Kuqa. With a total length of 561 kilometers, it connects northern and southern Xinjiang. It stretches across towering mountains and deep valleys, connecting many ethnic minority inhabited areas. Its completion has shortened the distance between northern and southern Xinjiang by nearly half from the original 1,000 kilometers, making it a monument in China’s highway construction history.
