The large-scale live-action mythological musical "The Pact of Kunlun" has premiered, opening its curtains in Urumqi, Xinjiang. This is the latest work created by Natural Landscape Grand Ceremony, with Mr. Mei Shuaiyuan, the founder of China’s live-action performances and chairman of Natural Landscape Grand Ceremony, serving as the lead director. The creative team is formidable. The live-action theater of "The Pact of Kunlun" is located in a valley on the east side of the Silk Road Ski Resort in the Nanshan scenic area of Urumqi, integrating the beauty of natural landscapes, the brilliance of artistic culture, and the novelty of modern technology. The grand live-action stage brings together the majestic and solemn Western Zhou Dynasty palace complex and the fairyland of the Western Regions in the same space, embodying both realistic and expressive stage effects. The 8,000-square-meter audience area can accommodate over 3,000 spectators to watch the performance.
As one of Urumqi’s Top Ten Live Performance Projects for Livelihood Construction in 2018 and a Cultural Benefit Project in 2019, ‘Kunlun’s Pact’ will be presented as a tribute on the occasion of celebrating the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, sounding the main theme of ‘safeguarding national unity and promoting ethnic unity’, and exhibiting the long-standing history of exchanges, interactions, and integrations between the mainland and frontier people.
Recently, the performance entered its final synthetic rehearsal phase. The chief director, Mr. Mei Shuaiyuan, has overall control over the final presentation effect of the work. His meticulousness and rigor in artistic presentation permeate every one of his requirements. He believes that ‘Kunlun’s Pact’ is a vital work that will take root and thrive in Xinjiang, displaying the romantic beauty of history and mythology amidst the landscapes.
Based on the records in ‘The Classic of Mountains and Seas’, ‘Records of Emperor Mu of Zhou’, and other classics, ‘Kunlun’s Pact’ narrates the story of Emperor Ji Man of the Western Zhou Dynasty fulfilling the pact with the Western Queen Mother, the daughter of the Kunlun deity, made by his ancestor Emperor Huang. He vowed to exchange hearts, traveling thousands of miles to the Western Regions. After enduring countless trials, he finally fulfilled the Kunlun pact with the Western Queen Mother, resonating with the harmonious sound of gold and jade, earning the loyalty of the people throughout the land.
Mr. Mei Shuaiyuan stated that Landscape Ceremony prefers themes with grand historical narratives, integrating the resplendent beauty of dreams with realistic dramatic conflicts, the call of poetry and distant places, and the ultimate expression of patriotism into natural live environments, forming content-centric performances that awaken the ancient Chinese stories long slumbering on the ancient land.
The story of Emperor Mu of Zhou and the Western Queen Mother’s thousand-year pact has been widely circulated in China. ‘The Jade Pool’ by Tang Dynasty poet Li Shangyin, a seven-character quatrain, interprets the legend of the Kunlun pact between the Western Queen Mother and Emperor Mu of Zhou: ‘The Jade Pool’s Mother opens her window of brocade, the song of Yellow Bamboo echoes the earth with sorrow. The eight steeds travel thirty thousand li a day, why doesn’t Emperor Mu return again?’
’Kunlun’s Pact’ is a historical mythology drama, with both historically accurate and mythical legendary parts. The mythical stories are filled with poetic and romantic vibes. The historical part is well-grounded, whether through ancient bronze ware or historical records, we can find ancient authentic traces,” said Mr. Mei Shuaiyuan.
According to ‘Records of Emperor Mu of Zhou’, Emperor Mu of Zhou was the fifth emperor of the Western Zhou Dynasty. He appointed Zao Fu as his charioteer. Zao Fu excelled at driving and tamed eight magnificent horses—Crimson Steed, Thief’s Black, White Justice, Overwhelming Wheel, Mountain Child, Canal Yellow, Hua Liu, and Green Ear—in the Peach Forest. These served as the imperial chariot for Emperor Mu, driving westward on his inspection tour. Starting from Hao Jing (today’s Xi’an, Shaanxi), Emperor Mu crossed the Tianshan Mountains, ascended Kunlun, and encountered the Western Queen Mother in mythology.
History is like poetry, legends are like dreams. Thousands of years later, the Kunlun mythology unfolds atop the mountains. ‘Kunlun’s Pact’ will unveil the dust-laden memories, reenacting the mysterious ancient mythology on the Western Regions’ land, displaying the historically interconnected cultures and shared bloodlines among various regions of the motherland, as well as the profound and enduring deep friendships among frontier people. It resonates with the harmonious sound of gold and jade echoing through the millennia between heaven and earth.
