The Duku Highway, the highway from Dushanzi to Kuqa. It spans 561 kilometers, connecting the northern and southern Xinjiang regions. It stretches across towering mountains and deep gorges. Its completion has shortened the distance between northern and southern Xinjiang by nearly half from the original 1,000 kilometers, making it a monument in China’s highway construction history.
To build this highway, tens of thousands of soldiers struggled for 10 years, with 168 road-building soldiers sacrificing their precious lives.
Scenic Areas and Attractions:
At the southern end of the Duku Highway, people will also admire the magnificent Keziliya Mountain Landscape Area, where the red rock forest is magnificent. Not only that, the nearby Mysterious Grand Canyon Scenic Area of the Tianshan Mountains also astonishes visitors with its deep and winding paths.
The Kuqa River accompanies one side of the highway throughout. After the highway passes through the
Between the mountains flow rivers, and gentle grasslands cover the hillsides. The evening glow settles on the grass, covering the pastures with a layer of gold. Shepherds enclose their flocks with stones and wooden fences, light fires in their yurts, and tendrils of smoke rise slowly…This plateau pastoral scenery will always unintentionally catch your eye along the way, filling your thoughts with poetry.
At the same time, you cannot help but hold your breath time and again due to the treacherous nature of the road. A large portion of the cliffs by the roadside form an overhang of no less than 90 degrees with the ground, resembling a knife cut, with a relative height difference of over 100 meters. The Longchi Falls, suspended in three sections halfway up the mountain, and the Large and Small Longchi Lakes, emerald green and teeming with waterbirds, are all hidden deep within the Tianshan Mountains at an altitude of over 2,000 meters in the middle of the Duku Highway.
Continuing onward through here, one will encounter a vast pine forest, and also witness China’s second-largest grassland—Bayanbulak Grassland. There, the grass is lush, wildflowers are like a sea of colors, Mongolian yurts are nestled with curling smoke, and every year, large flocks of swans inhabit the lakes.
In addition, the Nalati Grasslands, the Qiaoerma Scenic Area, the Daban passes, the snowy peaks of the high mountains, the flowing clouds in the mountains, and the country’s highest tunnels will all make this journey along this road extraordinary.
One-third of the Duku Highway is cliff-sided, and one-fifth is in the alpine permafrost zone. It crosses nearly ten major rivers of the Tianshan Mountains and four snow-capped passes. The driving difficulty is imaginable. However, the scenery along the way can only be described as magical. Starting from Kuqa, where the ancient Kuci Kingdom was located, and heading northeast along National Highway 217, the mystery of the Duku Highway begins to unfold layer by layer. Along the way, you can enjoy the fiery and dry scenery of the Keziliya Mountains, the mysterious and steep canyon scenery, the dense vegetation and nomadic customs in the hinterland of the Tianshan Mountains, as well as the vast grassland scenery, and more.
Scenic areas along the Duku Highway (from south to north): Keziliya Mountain Landscape, the Mysterious Grand Canyon of Tianshan, Daxiao Longchi Lakes, Tielimaiti Pass, Bayanbulak Grassland, Nalati Grassland, and Qiaoerma Revolutionary Martyrs Cemetery.
