Kanas is a Mongolian term meaning ‘beautiful, fertile, and mysterious’. It is located in the remote mountains and dense forests within the territory of Burqin County, Altay, Xinjiang.

Kanas Lake fascinates people with its mysterious lake monster, changing lake colors, and dazzling natural scenery. The lake water also changes color with the seasons and weather, creating a dreamy and enchanting lakeside scenery.

The surroundings of Kanas Lake are mixed with primitive forests of spruce, fir, and Siberian larch. The sunny slopes are covered with dense grassland. Different plant communities are clearly stratified. Every autumn, various colorful forests compete for brilliance, and the ever-changing clouds above the forest and the winding Kanas River constitute the most dreamlike autumn in Xinjiang.

Kanas Lake is an inland freshwater lake in the Kanas scenic area. The lake water comes from the glacial meltwater of the surrounding snow-capped mountains and local precipitation. The lake is at an altitude of 1,374 meters and covers an area of 45 square kilometers. It is a mountain lake formed by the Quaternary glaciation and is one of China’s deep lakes. Kanas Lake is crescent-shaped, surrounded by lush coniferous and broad-leaved mixed forests, which are connected to the vast mountainous grassland. It has been rated as China’s most beautiful lake by the Chinese National Geography magazine.

Shenxian Bay, Moon Bay, and Wolong Bay are collectively known as the “Three Bays”, which are landmark attractions of Kanas and must-visit places for those coming to Kanas. The first is Shenxian Bay, a shallow beach formed by Kanas Lake at a low and gentle place in the mountain stream. Under the sunshine, the lake surface shimmers with fine light, as if countless pearls are scattered arbitrarily. Therefore, it is also called “Pearl Beach”. With clouds often hovering above, the mountain scenery, lake water, and trees complement each other, creating a fairyland-like atmosphere, hence the name Shenxian Bay.

  II. The神仙’s Private Reserve—Hemu

Hemu Village is most famous for its colorful and enchanting autumn scenery. Cooking smoke rises amidst the autumn scenery, forming a dreamlike belt of mist, like a fairyland.

In the morning, on the observation deck of Hemu Village, you can take in the sunrise, snow-capped peaks, and trickling streams in the distance, and get a close view of the Tuwa people’s homes. The sunrise, morning mist, wooden cabins, and Hemu River constitute a charming fairy tale world.

The most beautiful season of Hemu’s scenery is from mid-September to early October each year. Due to latitude and altitude, autumn arrives here earlier than in the hinterland. In the golden autumn, the forest here is dyed in layers of vibrant colors. No matter where you look, you will see a warm and bright golden yellow—streams, wooden houses, cooking smoke, birch forests, and distant snow-capped mountains. It forms a paradise for photographers in the golden autumn.
