Xinjiang is vast in territory, so it is often divided into Northern and Southern Xinjiang based on the north and south of the Tianshan Mountains.
Northern Xinjiang is rich in natural landscapes, while Southern Xinjiang is rich in cultural customs. If this is your first time in Xinjiang, you must first come to Northern Xinjiang to appreciate its unique and diverse natural scenery.
The routes in Northern Xinjiang can basically be divided into two major parts: Kanas and Ili.
But if you are going to visit Northern Xinjiang during National Day, I recommend you go to Kanas~
A Summary of Must-Dos in Kanas
1. Kanas Lake and the Three Bays
Take a shuttle bus to enter Kanas National Geological Park and take a scenic tour along the Kanas River, enjoying the primitive Siberian larch forest, birch forest scenery, Shenxianwan, Wolongwan, Moon Bay, and Yaze Lake, and visiting Kanas Lake.
Pine forests cover the entire mountain. When the breeze blows, it rustles like waves.
After lunch, you can take a cruise boat to enjoy the lake and mountain scenery, or take a stroll by the lake to appreciate the tender and sweet charm of nature.
The Fish Viewing Pavilion is located on the top of a hill by Kanas Lake, offering an overview of Kanas Lake.
1. Baihaba
Known as the First Village and the First Post in the Northwest, it is located on the border between China and Kazakhstan.
2. Hemu
Located by Kanas Lake in Burqin County, Xinjiang, it is the concentrated residential area of the Tuvans.
Hemu Village is the gathering place of the Tuvans who have preserved the most complete ethnic traditions. With its primitive mountain wilderness scenery, the Hemu River flows through it. Primitive villages, snow-capped mountains, trees, and grasslands are integrated into one. Watching the sunset here, with curling smoke rising, you can feel the peaceful and tranquil life of a hidden paradise, which will surely cleanse your soul.
3. Koktokay
Located in Fuyun County, in Kazakh it means ‘Green Jungle’, and in Mongolian it means ‘Blue Harbor’. The scenery here was developed relatively late, and not many people know about it. Compared to the scenery of Kanas, it is more primitive, integrating mountains, rivers, grasslands, and peculiar rocks.
4. Colorful Bay
Located in Burqin County, it is Xinjiang’s famous Yadan landform. The rocks on the ground are eroded by the wind, and the rocks contain different minerals, so they appear in various colors under the refraction of sunlight. The Irtysh River flows through the middle, with a poplar forest on the opposite bank. The entire scenery is very beautiful and is also a favorite destination for many photographers.
5. Urho Devil’s City
Xinjiang’s unique wind erosion landform. The winds that howl through the year round erode the mountain rocks into various shapes, some resembling landmark buildings, others resembling various animals. Under the refraction of the setting sun, even their shadows have different poses. Additionally, due to the strong winds passing through, the sound of the wind resembles the crying of babies, hence it is called the Devil’s City.
